Moderation = Healthy

I have thought about this topic for a long time but hesitated to write my opinion here. I know what works for me but that doesn’t mean it will work for other people. However, after looking at the commercials all promising to help you loose those extra pounds I think that my opinion my help others and it will certainly not cost them anything.
1) Before you start any weight loss program, exercise program, etc. – talk to your doctor. Make sure that whatever you are about to do doesn’t compromise your health.
2) Portion size is vital. A portion of meat is the size of a deck of playing cards. (A steak that is the size of your head is several portions so be aware.)
3) Do you remember the actual size of a dinner plate? A charger or a platter is not a plate.
4) That plate should be full of food but it shouldn’t be heaped up so that it is in danger of falling off the plate. You can always come back for more.
5) If you are eating out, you don’t have to eat everything on your plate. You can take it home with you.
6) Your body does need some fat. You don’t need a lot but you do need it. It might as well be some that tastes really good. (That non-fat, low-fat stuff tastes really bad to me.)
7) Slow down. In addition to being really disgusting to watch someone bolt their food, it doesn’t help you with your weight loss plan.
8) Sit down. I know that people are in a rush. I am also rushing around to get everything done but eating standing up is not a good idea. (I won’t even talk about eating directly from the refrigerator – picture me giving you a beady-eyed stare over that!)
9) Fruits and vegetables are your friends. Pick ones you like and eat them. Learn new ways to cook them, if that makes them taste better. Don’t overcook them. Sometimes raw vegetables taste best.
10) Water, water, water! It is very good for you. It makes your hair and eyes shine, it makes your skin supple and it helps your body. You should be drinking 8-10 glasses a day. (I am not telling you anything new on this – I am just reminding you.)
11) Soda – I drink ginger ale when I am sick and other stuff once or twice a week. It is bad for your teeth and that low calorie stuff tastes just awful to me. Water is a far better choice.
12) My doctor tells me that a multi-vitamin is a fine thing to supplement your diet, but that it is only a supplement. The real nutrients come from food.
13) Exercise! You need to do this. Pick something that you like to do. I like to walk and to swim. I walk to and from work every day – it isn’t that far right now but I have walked up to 2.5 miles each way – and I swim whenever I can. (I am trying to swim three times a week but don’t always do that.)
14) For those of you with children – turn off whatever machine is on and take them outside to play. (Hide and seek, tag, jump rope – remember this stuff? It is still fun.)
If you are looking to take 20 pounds off by next weekend, all of this isn’t going to help you. This is a lifestyle change but I think you will like how you feel if you try it.
Just so you know I am 5’1” and weigh anywhere from 101 to 105. I have never had a weight problem and I do eat. I do have a great metabolism. Part of the reason that I don’t have a weight problem is that do all this stuff. I also like fruits and vegetables a lot. (4rhodes says that is weird but it isn’t. If you prepare them properly, they are delicious.) I also eat ice cream and cake and scalloped potatoes. The key is moderation.
