Why can't I look like a supermodel??

Dec 18 '00

Boy, am I beat! Churning out an average of 3 reviews a day has finally taken its toll on my poor, shriveled brain, so this would probably be my last article before embarking on self-imposed week long vacation away from epinions.

Today, we shall talk about...errr...weight loss? Isn't that strange? Why would someone who writes about video games also want to write about weight loss? Kinda like Mike Tyson writing about ballet. ( maybe Nina has gone bonkers from all that FF9 stuff )

Actually, I'm writing this for a slightly overweight friend of mine who got all excited after reading an article in a popular women's magazine about some supermodel's diet program. After not losing a single pound in 3 weeks, she finally gave up and went back to her old eating habits consisting of chocolate cookies & peanut butter sandwiches.

To this day, she's still scratching her head trying to figure out why it it didn't work on her. Millions of other women across the country are probably scratching their heads too trying figure out what went wrong. OK ladies ( you guys out there listen up too! ), I'll tell you why it worked so well on Miss Skinny and not on you. One word describes it all: somatotyping.

Somatotyping?? Huh? What's that? It's a word describing the 3 possible physique classifications - ectomorphs, mesomorphs & endomorphs.

Ectomorphs are the small-boned, frail looking individuals with super fast metabolisms and low levels of bodyfat. Due to their fast metabolism, they can eat everything in sight at a large buffet and not have to worry about gaining weight. An example of an ectomorph would be someone like Kate Moss.

Next, we have the athletic build or mesomorph. Their frame size range from medium to large and are naturally athletic thanks to their broad shoulders and narrow hips. Example: Marion Jones

Finally, we have the endomorphs, commonly known as 'pear shapes'. Most endomorphs are large-boned, have slow metabolisms and have trouble losing weight. I've noticed that there are 2 types of endomorphs - the 'round shape' and the original 'pear shape'. The difference between the 2 is that the 'round shape' has wider shoulders giving them a more rounded look compared to the 'pears'. On the other hand, the 'pear' people have slightly narrower shoulders and large hip bones. Example of an endomorph would be someone like Roseanne Arnold.

A little advice for endomorphs:
Endomorphs need to be a little more careful of what they eat, that means less sugars, salts & absolutely NO oily foods. You can try fooling the eating habit by having a slice of wheat bread followed by 2 to 3 glasses of water. Please note that this is not meant to replace a meal but to fill you up during one of those frequent cravings.

Also, do not be fooled into following some supermodel's diet and workout program you see in magazines hoping that it will work for you. Most supermodels are ectomorphs and are already naturally skinny, which means their diet will only work for them ( & others of similar build ), not anyone else!
