Monster.com is a job- searching web service that serves customers in seven different countries. The United States, France, U.K., Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, and Australia are all part of the Monster.com network. This website was launched in January, 1999, and it now has over eight million customer accounts.
Setting up an Account:
If you're really serious about finding a new job and if you want to make the most of what Monster.com has to offer, then you should begin by setting up your own Monster.com account. You will need to enter basic information about yourself and you will need to build an on-line resume. You also have the option of setting up cover letters, but this is not a requirement. Monster.com allows each customer to setup as many as five different resumes and five different cover letters.
After your resume is established, you then need to setup your agents. These are simply job- tracking tools. You can setup as many as five of them. your agent specifies the type of jobs that you are looking for, along with the cities that you would consider moving to for employment. For example, you could have one agent that is setup to search for computer- related jobs in your current hometown, and then setup a second agent that searches for technology- related jobs in other cities.
Website Features:
The job search is the most commonly used tool in this website. You start by selecting a city, then the type of employment you're looking for, and Monster.com displays a listing of jobs that meet your criteria. The jobs are listed in descending date order with the most recent jobs displayed first. If you want to narrow down the list, you can then perform a subsearch by entering a keyword to search on.
You can use the job search feature without establishing an account. However, if you choose to do this, you will have to fax or mail your resume to the employer. By establishing an account, you have the advantage of building a resume into the website and then e-mailing your resume to the employer. Most all of the jobs in Monster.com will allow you to e-mail your resume, but there are a few that will not, which means you will have to mail or fax regardless of whether or not you have an account.
Besides searching for employment, Monster.com has other useful features to assist you in the job market. The Career Center includes good advice on topics like writing resumes and cover letters, how to effectively interview, salary information for different occupations in different cities, relocation advice, etc. There is also a feature called Career Talk, which allows you to chat on-line and/or post job- related inquiries and advice on a message board.
When you logon to your Monster.com account, you can quickly see how many employers have read each of your resumes on file. You can also check your job application history and get a quick summary of all of the jobs that you have applied for on-line. Remember: your resume is available for all employers to read, regardless of whether or not you search for jobs yourself. So, you will get inquires even if you don't do anything else at all. But, if you're serious about finding a job, it's recommended that you take a proactive approach by performing job searches and e-mailing your resume as much as possible.
Final Thoughts:
Monster.com is a good web service for the person who is seeking to find better employment. I've had my own Monster.com account now for about 2 months. The number of inquires that I received was very high at first, but now it has fallen sharply. I probably got between 5 and 10 inquires per day in the beginning, and now I only get 1 or 2 per day. So, needless to say, I haven't had the success I was looking for with this service. But it's really to early in the game for me to say, with certainty, whether or not the site is an effective tool or not. A little more effort on my part will likely improve my results.
I recommend setting up a Monster.com account of your own and doing a little job hunting. Even if you are satisfied in your current position, what do you have to lose? The job of your dreams could be just a click away!
