About damieng

I'm a huge fan of mystery and thriller fiction with the preference for the more hardboiled style although occasionally a more sedate police procedural book will more than suffice.

To All Fans of the Mystery / Thriller Genre

If there is anyone out there who are fans of mystery books and who love to talk about them, you would be very welcome to join me and other mystery maniacs at The Mystery and Thriller Forum . If it's a recommendation you're after or you just want to gab about the latest fantastic book that you've read and would like to meet some great people, we'd love to meet you.

Reading Australian Crime Fiction – A Work In Progress

There are many many exciting thrillers written by Australian authors. The vast majority of these books are ignored outside of Australia, understandable given the fact that they are rarely published elsewhere. This is a real shame because there are some books of outstanding quality just waiting to be discovered. I'm here to help you discover some of these Aussie crime authors by reading and reviewing as many of their books as I can. I have even taken it a step further by launching a new web-site that lists the works of as many crime authors as I can track down.
You can visit my web-site by clicking here or you can click on the banner at the bottom of the page.

Michael Robotham
One of the most exciting authors on the scene in recent years, Robotham's books are fast-paced psychological thrillers set in London.

Steve J. Spears
An exciting new 13 book series of darkly comic whodunits has been proposed and put under the title The Pentangeli Papers. So far only 3 have been named. They are:

Garry Disher
Disher is responsible for a strong hardboiled series featuring Wyatt, a professional criminal with a ruthless attitude and an unforgiving attitude. But Wyatt's going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment and he has to work hard just to survive.

Disher's second series features Detective Inspector Hal Challis a gritty Melbourne-based cop

Peter Temple
Temple's series books feature Jack Irish, a fitzroy-based solicitor who also has a knck as a good people-finder. Absorbing mysteries are helped along by a couple of Jack's interesting sideline interests - horse-racing and cabinet-making. This is an excellent series notable for it's rich character development

One of the books of 2005 also came from the pen of Peter Temple:

James Bradley

This is a moving story of a man obsessed with the prospect of finding a forgotten Portuguese shipwreck on the south coast of New South Wales and the story told to him by a dying man who just may hold the key to the mystery.
In 2006 he has followed up with a dark, gothic thriller:
The Resurrectionist

Marshall Browne

He writes a series featuring Inspector Anders of the Rome Police Force

A German auditor named Franz Schmidt features in:

  • The Eye of the Abyss

The latest thriller is set in Japan featuring Detective Hideo Aoki in a super-charged thriller

Jon Cleary

Jon Cleary has written over 50 novels, but his most popular and most enduring are his Scobie Malone series. Malone is a private investigator in Sydney. The series began in 1966 and to date consists of 18 titles with the last published in 2001.

Marele Day

A private investigator series featuring Sydney-based Claudia Valentine

Michael Herrmann
The White Trash Trilogy is rather reminiscent of Carl Hiaasen for the humour and the near manic themes. Here's an author to look out for.

Gabrielle Lord
A private investigator series featuring Sydney-based woman Gemma Lincoln proves that tough detective stories don't have to star a man

Lord's other series is the outstanding forensic thrillers featuring Jack McCain. McCain works with the Australian Federal Police as a forensic scientist, but as well as the fascinating investigative work, the series is filled with gripping personal dramas.

Fans of the humorous crime fiction would do well to check out:
