Several years ago my wife and I were on the road a lot. Traveling from church to church to minister with a 7 and a 5 year old proved to be a real chore. The children did not seem to appreciate our sight seeings. Totally by accident we discovered a wonderful process for killing the time on the road.
When stopping for food like lunch and dinner we stopped at a McDonald's that had a play area, (climbing tubes, etc.) and while my wife and I ate our meals our children would play to their hearts content. After they were well worked and tired only then would we buy their food. The secret we learned was to not have them eat it there. We would give them their foods once we got on the road. For the next half hour they would be quietly eating their meals. Once that was finished the starches from the food, combined with the previous exercise, caused them to fall fast asleep. They would sleep for up to an hour and a half afterward.
Once wakened we would stop at the next rest area and allow them to run, play, and whatever for another half hour. The last hour of the trip would usually go by quickly.
For trips of 3-5 hour duration this system was fool proof.
