Kissing in the Alleys of Guanajuato...

by mrkstvns mrkstvns is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Hotels & Travel, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Jan 20 '05
Pros: Colonial style meets modern-day sophistication
Cons: Nope....no cons around here!
People seem to like moaning about how all the resort areas of Mexico "aren't the real Mexico". I don't get it though. If they don't like those resorts, why do they go there? Seems to me that more folks should be going straight to Guanajuato and ...

The heart of Mexico

by jesse12 , Sep 23 '02
Pros: Well preserved Colonial city, with great architecture. Lots of history
Cons: The atmosphere is slightly spoiled by the many tourists.
Brief History:

Guanajuato means "hill of frogs" in the local indigenous language, because the Tarascan Indians believed that the frog represented the god of wisdom. The Spaniards conquered Guanajuato in 1552, and a man by the name of Juan De...

A Treasure in the Heart of Mexico

by kimmiko , Nov 12 '99
Pros: Visually stunning city with many historical, intellectual and interesting sites
Cons: Anyone who appreciates the history of Mexico will enjoy this city!
It really frustrates me when I hear people speak of Mexico based solely on the border towns they have visited. There is no comparison of these chaotic and frenzied cities of the desperate and ruthless to the beauty and charm of the inner cities. ...

Guanajuato: The Heart and Soul of Mexico

by immac , Jul 30 '00
Pros: Ancient, Unique, and beautiful
Cons: Plumbing--take T.P.
INTRODUCTION: Three years ago my wife and I, retired and to a degree self employed, stunned our grown children and practically everyone else we know by announcing that we were going to drive Mexico. Not just drive into Mexico, but all of it, border...

Guanajuato - Crib of Independence

by twila , Aug 13 '00
Pros: Beautiful! Wonderful place to spend a vacation
Cons: Can't really think of any
Guanajuato is a lovely state nestled in between the mountains in central Mexico. The central location places Guanajuato within a few hours of many places of interest (Mexico City, Puerta Vallarta, Guadalajara, etc.)

Guanajuato itself is...

Salvatierra - Home Sweet Home

by twila , Aug 13 '00
Pros: Typical Mexican small town. Lots of culture
Cons: Life is very laid back! (Not necessarily a bad thing)
Salvatierra is a beautiful colonial town in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. This town is my husband's hometown, and after spending months at a time there, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a taste of Mexican life.

Don't go here if...

Museo de las Momias

by twila , Aug 14 '00
Pros: Very original - part of the culture
Cons: MORBID
I did not believe my husband when he first told me that there were mummies in Mexico. I was wrong. The "Mummy Museum" is an original tourist site located in the city of Guanajuato.

The mineral content of the soil in the area around...

No place like Guanajuato

by memomx , Aug 01 '00
Pros: Unique atmosphere
Cons: Be prepared for lots of walking
No doubt that Guanajuato is unique - with its narrow callejones (alleyways) traversing the steep hillsides of the city, it conjures up the image of a city in Spain. Basically, there are only two streets in downtown Guanajuato - the subterraneo leading...

Business Trip to Guanajuato

by hzea , Apr 17 '02
Pros: Historic churches, shopping, food, Mummy museum
Cons: Not easy or cheap to fly to from the US
I recently visited Guanajuato for a business meeting held in Feb. 2002. I had not heard much about the city and did not really know what to expect. I must say that I was very impressed. I have traveled a lot of the coast, but this was my first trip to...

Pros: Historical monument - interesting tour

The Alhondiga de Granaditas is the site of the first battle of Mexican Independence. This famous monument is located in the heart of the city of Guanajuato.

The building itself is a wonderful example of the Spanish influence in Mexican...

San Miguel de Allende

by Lono , Jul 17 '00
Pros: Great Spot
Cons: Tourists
San Miguel is a self described Bannana Republic that has long been a haven for european and american expatriates. The charm of this little town comes from the happy intermingling of native and new peoples. The mexican traditions are as strong here as...

Digging Guanajuato
by travelina ,Nov 17 '06
Pros: Friendly, charming, safe. "Old buildings tastefully converted into hotels and restaurants."
Cons: "Sprawl on the edges...significant erosion and overgrazing" in the surrounding hills.
New report by Natioanl Geographic Traveler on the best and the worst UNESCO World Heritage Sites rated Guanajuato in the top 5: "Charming, peaceful, welcoming city, few of the urban problems evident in larger Mexican cities... the historic center is in great shape. The city highly deserves its status as a living monument. Delightful town to wander."
