A majestic place comprising an intricate combination of wealth and poverty. Johannesburg is a lovely place where you can take in the culture, absorb the violent past, and dwell in the gardens of the Jo'burg zoo. The only major downfall of the city would be the crime - you'd have to be careful driving with your windows down as this would be an invitation for a potential mugging or even a stolen vehicle. Having said that, however, it is a must see. Many fantastic restaurants and curio stores with a nightlife to boot.
Jo'burg... watch your back. I went there on my own (yes, stupid), and at first felt pretty safe. However, after walking around a bit, I was mugged. I never saw the people, but told from those around me that there were four or five men, each with guns. The came from behind, put me in a headlock and emptied my pockets.
If you are going to go there, just watch out and please, please, no matter how brave or experienced of a traveler you are, do not go there on your own.
