Pros: comfortable on transatlantic routes; nice staff Cons: not so comfortable on European flights
Lufthansa is a good airline. There is quite the disparity between intercontinental flights which use the newest A340 models and 747-400s, and the European flights which use older 737 and 320 aircraft. Big deal. This is a normal thing. It's in sync...

Are Lufthansa's economy seats made for short, thin people and where are the PTV's?
by airline_critic ,Oct 17 '04
Pros: Good Food Cons: No PTV's and the seats are too close together.
The seats in Lufthansa economy class are too close together. I recently flew Lufthansa from New York to Frankfurt and I was very 'squashed' in my seat. My knees were touching the seat in front of me and I could barely move. when I reclined my seat the person in back of me complained that my seat was hitting him. What's wrong with Lufthansa? When Compared to American Airlines Lufthansa has some of the worst seating plans in the airline industry (especially in economy). Lufthansa only gives PTV's to their Business and First Class Passengers where as most other European Airlines offer them in all classes if service. On the 8 hour flight only a moving map was shown and some European news.

For long distances, pick another airline
by jchayes448 ,Mar 18 '07
Pros: I made my connecting flight Cons: Seating comfort, service, shabby furnishings.
I took an overnight economy-class flight from San Francisco to Frankfurt, and it was undoubtedly the most uncomfortable flight I've ever had. Seats are incredibly cramped, and, because they have so little space in which to operate, only recline one or two-inches. This is unforgivable on an 11-hour overnight flight. Service ranged from rude to indifferent and food was so-so. The seat tray was broken and the interior seemed to be generally shabby.

Terrible!
by frank5555 ,Jan 07 '07
Pros: None. Cons: Ridiculously bad customer service.
So they made me buy another ticket to get on a flight I already had a ticket for because they couldn't figure out how to void my ticket and reissue it. They said it wouldn't be a problem and I would get an immediate refund. I was like whatever my flight is leaving give me a ticket. So they charged me 3500 bucks. Six months later no refund. I have sent 12 faxes made at least 30 calls wrote four letters and haven't even been able to talk to someone who can fix my problem. They keep telling me that the refund department doesn't have a phone. Come on. Who doesn't have a phone in 2007. Obviously, they save a lot of money by screwing people until they finally give up. Stay away!

Lufthansa = Rude / Ignorant Behavior
by rohnin4hire ,May 11 '07
Pros: An option for connections to parts of Germany. Cons: Rude, cavalier, argumentative behavior.
Pre-flight service was nearly non-existent. Post booking service was non-existent. Service Center personnel missed their calling as IRS agents, more concerned about keeping their customers lined up waiting for help than actually helping them. Flight crew apparently believes that a Lufthansa uniform entitles them to ignore US Customs agent instructions and push their way through the passengers to get to their curbside cigarettes and hotel transportation. Without a doubt the most consistently rude and socially ignorant service sector personnel I've ever encountered. I've been doing international travel for approximately 20 years and this is the worst airline I've ever flown to either Europe or Asia. Fortunately, there are options and I will definitely be availing myself of KLM/Northwest for my future trips to Germany and France.

Pros: Good service on the way from Orlando to Frankfurt. Cons: Delays, SEATING, service, food
We flew from Frankfurt to Orlando on December 26 and had the WORST experience ever !! We are a family of four and we were told that our 12 and 16 years old children were old enough not to sit with the rest of the family. We are four people and got seats very far from each other, all of us. No one could help us. When we got on the plane we had to ask around, if someone could change seat with us. Our son, 12 year old, was heartbroken. Therefor, We give this airline 0 out of 5.

Average among major international airlines
by Prim8Pal ,May 29 '04
Pros: On time and efficient. Cons: Food and wine are below average among major international carriers.
I flew Lufthansa on four intercontinental legs between the U.S., Africa and Germany in May 2004. All our flights were on-time which is always a big plus. Planes were generally clean and service was okay but not exceptional. However, Lufthansa fell short of other airlines that I've used (like British Air, Air France, Cathay Pacific, and Singapore) in several areas:
Meals on all our flights were not very good. The wines were particularly wretched. They do not serve nuts or other snacks with cocktails, so bring your own.
The planes from San Francisco to Germany were not the most modern. They still had the overhead screens instead of personalized screens at your seat. Only 2 movies and a few short subjects on a long 10 hour flight, with long gaps between the shows.
They tend to be a bit strict about enforcing the one carry-on rule, which can be good or bad depending on your point of view. Be moderate on the size of the carry-ons you take.
Overall the airline is acceptable but not as good as other major carriers.

Teutonic efficiency triumphs again
by Champale ,Jun 30 '04
Pros: Clean bathrooms. German efficiency. On time for everything. Cons: Some flights deplane on the tarmac. Not a big bummer though.
Boondoggle of all time. My company sends me to Cannes, France for a week for a job well done. I, being no dummy, use my Platinum Amex card to bring my wife along as well.
Amex books us on Lufthansa.
I've never had any experience with them so turn to trusty epinions for the scoop.
Turns out, Lufthansa is great. Well, business class at least.
The flight attendants were friendlier than I had expected from other reviews. The food was pretty good. The fish tasted as fresh as can be expected. The chicken with pesto was the real winner though.
Flights were on time. Bathrooms in the plane were remarkably clean. By the end of most ten hour flights, I'm afraid to enter the bathrooms but they were pretty spotless.
All in all, we had no complaints and in fact I would gladly fly Lufthansa again.

Horrible experience at Frankfurt
by ptan1 ,Sep 21 '07
Pros: None. Cons: Horrible service, Horrible attitude
Lufthansa could not fly to my destination because of weather and fog. Instead of saying there is a 18 hours of delay, they delayed it 6 hours at a time. Thus, they do not have to provide for accommodations. The whole flight 500+ customers remained at the airport without sleep or decent food.
Never flew with them again.

Worst Atlantic crossing I've ever had
by geotrash ,Oct 29 '05
Pros: Flight attendants were pleasant and efficient, flights were on time. Cons: Economy seating is the worst I've seen, difficult to get seat assignments prior to flight.
Just returned from a trip to France for business mixed with pleasure, and wanted to offer a few impressions of Lufthansa. First, the good: efficiency and service friendliness.
Unfortunately, that's where it ends. The economy class seats on the 747 are the most horrifically cramped I have ever experienced on an international flight. Add to that that I was unable to get assigned seats together months before our departure, despite polite phone calls and an early check-in on the day of the flight, and it made for the worst airline experience I've had in recent memory. Absolutely miserable for a 6 foot tall person like me.
Last trip on Lufthansa for me. Standby passengers had better seats than we did.

German INeffiency
by brittski ,Aug 20 '08
Pros: Flies from my nearest airport Cons: Everything else
In the last two months i've flown Lufthansa from LCY to MUC three times, on two of those occasions i've had flights cancelled with no prior warning. Though i understand these things happen, the airline's handling of the situation has been less than satisfactory. The first time i was rerouted to LHR instead of LCY which imposed significant extra cost and many wasted hours. The second time i was delayed from LCY until 24 hours later. When i was finally on my way, the next day, i was told that they now have a new policy whereby only business class passengers can have drinks, i wasn't even permitted to buy one. Do they really think anybody in their right mind would pay three times the economy fare to sit in exactly the same size seat in order to drink ԅ worth of wine? In neither case was i able to claim any compensation whatsoever. The staff are unhelpful to the point of rudeness and even though passengers are supposed to be protected under EC Regulation 261/2004 Lufthansa always plays the "extraordinary circumstances" card. Neither myself, nor anybody else in my company, will ever fly Lufthansa again.

No long-haul flight with Lufthansa
by revy ,Jul 23 '07
Pros: on time, clean Cons: food, seats and no IFE
German companies are known for high quality and service standards, unfortunately Lufthansa doesn't fit in.
My review is based on the connections Frankfurt-San Francisco and Denver-Frankfurt(in economy class).
The food is eatable and the flights were on time but the comfort of the seats leaves some room for improvement and the quality of inflight-entertainement(IFE) is very poor. I've flown with British Airways and Swiss, everyone had his personal tv screen with more than a dozen tv and music channels as well as current flight informations. There's no difference in ticket prices. Smaller kids were happy and silent while watching cartoons but on Lufthansa this wasn't possible and bored kids can be very....well you know
To sum it up, the possible lack of IFE is something you should really pay attention to

Lufthansa-Wost airline to fly

Pros: None Cons: 21 seats in most of planes that do not recline
I traveled on Lufthansa from India to US. Never in my life I will fly by this airline again. I was on a seat which does not recline. The fight attendant told me that in most of their planes they have 3 such rows (21 seats) and they obviously can not do anything.

Let's hit the road...
by lyuba ,Mar 30 '06
Pros: On time Cons: Food is not great
I fly a lot to Europe, because I'm from Estonia and most of my family is still there. The first couple time I flew home I traveled by United Airline, and I don't want to say anything bad about it, but I missed my plane just because of the timing, they only gave me an hour or so, and there were crowds of people waiting. Well, after that flight I decided to fly Lufthansa, because I heard it was a good airline company, and yes it is. The flight might be long and boring, but they got interesting movies, and it's pretty comfortable to sleep in the seats. The only bad side is that the food is not that great. And sometimes it gets kind of cold.

Luf. Doesn't deserve the Reputation
by tojkr ,Aug 31 '05
Pros: Timely flights, engineering. Cons: discrimination, difficulties, pride, worst miles and more service.
I had flown several times with Lufthansa. There were mixed experiences. But these are more consistent or always happened :
0) Horrible miles and more. Their miles and more number 1-800 581-6400 (try it yourself :) ) was not even attended.
1) The seats are average. A bit uncomfortable and small.
2) Some passengers felt clear indifference in the way economy class passengers were treated.
3) Food is average / poor.
4) attitude and hospitality is poor.
5) In my first journey in 1999, an yellow teethed air-steward made fun of my name ( JayKumar RajGopal )and vegetarianism while his name was something like 'shneicfreis Klustchberg'.

There a hundred better ways to fly
by semike ,Aug 23 '04
Pros: On time Cons: Awful food, arrogant staff
Have flown Lufthansa to the States and Asia several times. Their economy was usually always ok.
Now on my flight from Frankfurt to Los Angeles it was a total joke. The catering for instance has gone to the dogs. When opting for chicken you are fed a stew that contains suspicious bits of chicken legs that you would not even appreciate in a cheap lunch joint.
The entertainment system was not functioning at all which is a pain during a 12 hour flight. The interior is dated and should be freshened up. And please add an extra inch of leg room.

Terrible Customer Service
by rbhargav ,May 24 '05
Pros: Convenient connections from Dallas Cons: Poor customer service
No validity of prior seat assignments
If you are travelling alone, this airline is about as good as any other. But if you are trying to fly with kids, this is one hell of a ride.
Seat assignments mean nothing. I called several times to confirm my seat numbers. The checkin desk knows nothing about that.
They broke the stroller and even a visit to their customer 'relations' center did not help us !!!
Worst of all even at Frankfurt trying to talk to someone in 'customer relations' got us only a fax number !!
This is either an airline that is supremely confident of it's level of service or one that does not care. I am inclined to think that it is the latter.

A Breath Of Fresh Air
by leslielbf ,Mar 08 '05
Pros: Constant updates, hot meal service, attentive pursors, and contemporary movies. Cons: Cramped, expensive and meal was awful.
Lufthansa has now taken a place as the best airline in my book for travel. The seats were nothing special, they were the standard uncomforable seats. However, we viewed 2 current movies, recieved continual beverage service numerous times, were provided with warm towels to wipe our hands before a hot meal was served and the staff was courteous and professional!

Useless website for starters...
by gherkins ,Apr 29 '09
Pros: You get food (of sorts). Fairly reliable. Cons: Very cramped and often overbooked. Website awful. Customer support (website and telephone) even worse.
I fly with them almost every week - so have a lot of experience:
Website is awful - you can't find anything, online check-in often fails, you get no replies to emails. Why can't they have a decent website like almost all other airlines?
Flights are generally ok, although ALWAYS overbooked, and in Munich you will often have to take a bus to the plane (in a brand new terminal dedicated to Lufthansa!).
The food often is inedible (sometimes Sauerkraut - can you imagine the smell on a plane!).

Lufthansa customer service does not exist!
by seanyg ,Oct 15 '05
Pros: Price Cons: Everything else!
Complete disregard for passengers, rude or non existent staff, losing luggage for days on end. As of 12.09.05 the contact page on their website does not work, the telephone number (01803803803) listed on their website does not exist, the telephone number listed on their Yellow Pages advertisement (08457737747) is incorrect, and the statement on their website to contact Lufthansa with Complaints and Compliments via email is apparently untrue, as when I spoke to a representative on 0870 8377747 she informed me that no email address actually exists to send comments, and that any feedback has to be submitted by letter to a PO Box address in Dublin! And finally, the country code and fax number listed for the European Customer Relations Centre in Ireland is also incorrect!! This is hardly a ringing endorsement to Lufthansas commitment to customer care!

LETTER FROM LOST CUSTOMER(S)
by hoferc ,Jun 29 '05
Pros: It has an acceptable safety record Cons: It's not scrupulous and caring when dealing with its customers- does not honor commitments.
I have used the airline for over three years but have recommneded against it.
1. It will insist on a local physican in Yemen to declare a pregnant person fit to fly and will not honor an assesment from a persons own physician even if it satisfies the international travel requirements.
2. It will not honor it's commitment on its promotional fares Promotional fare from Sanaa Frankfurt to the US when the starting point was Frankfurt rather than Sanaa. Mr. Bayer 96773252460(Sanaa) was responsible for this .
3. It has a history of not refunding fares when itws flights are cancelled.
4. While it will represent a personal hardship I will scrupulously try to avoid any flight with LH

Exceptional service...Exceptional staff!!!
by dracula400 ,Sep 08 '05
Pros: Staff very courteous and loving, especially towards children. Cons: none
My wife and I have for the most part flown Lufthansa simply because it's the BEST when it comes to service. We have tried Air France, Air Canada, KLM they are cheaper as far as price, but their service is sub-standard...the staff is rude, they support a dont care attitude, and if you have kids, forget the staff will not answer your calls and wish you had not got ON at all. Quite the opposite with Lufthansa, if you have kids, especially infants
they will go out of their way to make sure you and your child are not only comfortable, but will make sure your baby gets everything she/he needs!
I understand that PRICE is a big factor when choosing a carrier
but having traveled for 30+ years worldwide
SERVICE in my opinion ranks higher than price and with that I would definitely recommend Lufthansa granted they are more expensive than some of the other carriers.

by lindah0502 ,Mar 21 '07
Pros: Great service, good food, reasonable prices. Cons: Seats a bit uncomfortable.
I travel internationally at least 3 times a year. I usually fly the same airlines but decided to try
Lufthansa because the price was right. I was not disappointed at all.

Horrible Customer Service LH444
by nate6472 ,Feb 19 '04
Pros: Polite within EU Cons: Rude transatlantic to US
See complete comment at http://216.36.201.73/LH444.htm
Frankfurt to US, the attendant pointed her finger in my face and said she did not like my tone after some conversation about what could be done about a screaming baby for the past 5+ hours. Not concerned about the customer, accused me of trying to get upgraded (why would I wait 5+ hours and I did not ask to be upgraded). TV in our area did not work. I will NEVER fly Lufthansa again and have no desire to even visit Germany if this is the way they treat Americans.

Pros: The english they talk is oxford english (Great Britain) not american english. Cons: Nothing wrong with this company at all they always try to do their best
I love it just because of how helpful they are to kids. and how courteous they are. They are great with kids they give them things to entertain themselves with and have great choices of movies.

Could be much better
by hbling ,Jul 29 '09
Pros: Pleasant crew Cons: Are they serious about customer feedback? Rude & dismissive Miles and More staff.
My first flight on Lufthansa from Brussels-Frankfurt-Singapore and here's my review: (1) Seat is uncomfortably hard and not easy to even catch a nap on. (2) My pull-out table cannot be deployed and I had to eat while balancing the food on my lap. (3) This is a long flight and there's no personal entertainment system and it was impossible to watch anything on the small shared TV from my first row without spraining my neck! 4) The fare is equal to or more expensive than other airlines offering superior services e.g. Singapore Airlines, BA, Quantas or SAS. (5) Lastly, there is no number for you to contact Lufthansa for providing customer feedback. I wonder how serious they value customer feedback. I had to write and fax my feedback to them and it's been a few days. I can only hope to hear from them (I will provide an update here once I hear from them). The only positive note on my trip is the crew. They were pleasant and nice, comparable to Singapore Airlines.

Worst customer service ever encountered.
by aa272448 ,Jun 08 '09
Pros: NONE Cons: Terrible, everything
Ignorant, unfriendly, rude and incompetent employees. It took for ever to talk to someone who did not care about my problem. No wonder the germans created the concentration camps because they absolutely do not have any sense of humanity. NEVER aging LF.

RUDE
by arprem ,Aug 17 '09
Pros: new fleet Cons: Attitude of personnel.Business class seats.Lounges.
I fly at least 10 times from Europe to Northern America and back; all in business class. My company uses mainly BA and LH. In comparison, LH exceeds BA in only one thing - the staff is the most rude personnel I have ever seen in the service industry! As a business class traveler you are treated as a 2nd class citizen. If I can avoid LH I will do so.

Lufthansa Flight - HORRIBLE!
by dr_beth ,Sep 15 '09
Pros: Food is decent. Cons: HORRIBLE customer srvice. Be warned: show up to your scheduled flight 4 hours early!!
I agree with the reviewers below. They have a terrible attitude. I showed up to my flight 1:30 prior to departure time and they had sold my ticket!! They would not admit it but they were almost belligerent with me. I could not believe this was happening. I know airlines do that but I had to be on that plane. I'm a doctor and was going on a conference. They were extremely RUDE and told me that I had to come back 3 days later to see if I can get a ticket to Europe. What? Most other airlines route you to a later flight or do something. They were completely and inhumanely careless about their customer. That is not what I am used to with American airlines. Long story short, I will never fly with them again. This is just my story, I'm sure others have had different experiences with them.

Lufthansa: watch out for fare rules tricks costing big $$$
by sibearsky ,Jun 02 '09
Pros: wide network, seldom lose luggage, decent midrange quality. Cons: Ripping off clients with uncommon fare tricks.
Just had an unsual situation with Lufthansa. They subtly changed fare rules ripping off their clients. It used to be that "none refundable" tickets are at least changable for a later date with a fee and fare difference. Now they require the changes to be done before the original departure date for a new date (with certainty!). If you're not sure of the new date, you ave to change again. The change fee is roughly 20% of the roundtrip fare. Changes after the original travel date are not permitted! When talking to a Representative I found they cannot even send fare rules with email.
I could not go because of visa requirements and lost 1000$ thanks to this trick. So, I put Lufthansa into the "never again" folder.

Avoid lufthansa Airlines
by agrawal ,Jun 19 '09
Pros: Airlines did not provide them with any kind of accomodation for this. Cons: It was very frustrating.
My 2 daughters are traveling alone in India. They had flight friday morning 9am from New delhi to come to USA. They went to airport at 6 am on Friday morning and they were told by airlines that their flight was canceled and now they have flight on saturday morning at 2:25 am and now they would be flying to JFK airport instead of Newark on saturday. Airlines did not inform us about cancelation of the flight. They had 3 numbers given. They had no apology for this and there was no problem with the weather. They just decided to cancel the flight. Our family live in Gorakhpur. My kids took a train to come to New Delhi. Now they are wandering in New Delhi for one more day with their luggage.
