2005 -2006 Jetta- All Gown-Up? Or just Old and Decrepit?

by shoplmart shoplmart is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Cars & Motorsports, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10
May 08 '05 - Updated Jan 14 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Improved interior space and quality, optional #2 package, handling.
Cons: Engine is only adequate, almost $27,000.
The Bottom Line: The new Jetta isn't a bad car, however until VW improves its base engine, $27,000 is too much moo-la for this vehicle.

When I drove the 4th generation Jetta a few years back, I was impressed with how refined and fun-to-drive the Jetta could be when equipped with its VR6 or even the 1.8 T engine. Unfortunately, Jetta's equipped those engines were priced way beyond my ...

Destyled for 2005.5: Lots of pros, lots of cons

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Interior materials, high feature content, German feel, off-the-line grunt, seat comfort, cargo volume
Cons: Styling, tepid performance, mediocre fuel economy, reliability concerns
The Bottom Line: The appeal of luxury-class interior materials and feature content is dulled by Toyota styling and un-Toyota reliability concerns.

At last January's Detroit auto show a few cars really surprised me. On the positive side, a couple of new cars from Saturn will actually be desirable. I very much look forward to driving them. Then there was the totally redesigned VW Jetta. The old ...

Volkswagen Builds A Better Toyota

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Classy interior, ingot-like solidity, high feature content, abundant midrange torque.
Cons: Relatively exorbitant pricing, long-throw clutch, detached steering feel, lacks European style and character.
The Bottom Line: The latest Jetta has become richer, heavier, and less individualistic. Apparently, Volkswagen thinks its buyers have done the same, and is no longer vying for the youth vote.

My Experience If you've been following the release of the new Jetta, you've probably noticed a common theme in all its publicity, from Volkswagen's ad copy to the magazine reviews that regurgitate it: "The Jetta has grown up." Indeed, the car ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: engine, 5-speed manual transmission, standard features
Cons: $25,000 for a base compact?
The Bottom Line: Please see the review

A few weeks ago, I read in the local city advertising paper that the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta is 1/2 the car of one of their high end sports cars - the Lambo Gallardo. I believe he mentioned the fact that VW owns Lamborghini, and that that car has a 5.0 L ...

A German Car?

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fun, Economical, Great Resale Value, Safety
Cons: None
The Bottom Line: Its a Volkswagen and a Jetta-It cannot be beat.

When it comes to word association, the word Volkswagen always brings one response. That would be "German." This car has all of the outstanding German engineering that you can get for a reasonable price. The only non-German thing about it is its ...

2005.5 Jetta TDI automatic initial review

Jun 05 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good fuel economy, quality interior and nice overall fit and finish.
Cons: underpowerd, generic looking.
The Bottom Line: This car is designed for those who want good fuel economy and a quality near luxury product.

I took a very extended test drive with the new Jetta TDI sedan. Because I do not own the car yet, I will keep the review short and to the point. By the way, the other reviews on this car pretty much nail the issues right on the head. Read the other ...

Pros: Phenominal mileage, dependable, fun to drive.
Cons: Small back seat. No other problems.
The Bottom Line: Best commuter car I have ever seen. and FUN to drive. STILL the best after 2 years!!

I bought this car to replace my 1997 Saturn SL2. I needed a car that would get good mileage, be fun to drive, and be able to tow a small trailer when needed. All I can say is this car has met every expectation and more. The mileage is unbelievable. I ...

Pros: Great interior space. Awesome fuel economy. Large trunk. Fun to drive!
Cons: Maintenance must be done at dealership.
The Bottom Line: A great car with with great fuel economy!

This is my second Jetta TDI (see my review of my 2003 TDI). I traded in my beloved 2003 for the larger 2005.5 Jetta due to an addition to my family and the need to fit a carseat in the back. I have owned the car since 2005 and now have 57,000 miles on ...

Pros: Peppy off the line, holds the road amazingly well. Interior very plush. Very nice car.
Cons: Brake and accelerator pedals to close. Center console top adjusts forward and blocks drink holder.
The Bottom Line: Fun car that doubles as a very classy ride. Economical, great handling and very nice interior make this a very nice way to spend my morning and evening commute.

This is a great car. Very comfortable and compares in looks to the Lexus GS300. We just bought the first one here in Kansas and it is amazing. If you are familiar with the Jetta's, go look again at this one. A total re-vamp of the car and it is ...

The Bottom Line: Great money-saving fun-to-drive car.

I bought the 2005 VW Jetta TDI new in October 2004. At the time, I was looking for a car that had good gas mile age and was fun to drive. The car has alot of get up and go. I had no problems the first year, however I have had several problems with the ...

Double Whammy: Jetta vs Passat

by bj70117
Jul 10 '05 - Updated Feb 17 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Occupant Safety, agressive front end, GLI upgrades, more room.
Cons: Lower cost interior materials verses the last model in the base 2.5 edition.
The Bottom Line: Choose the GLI model

Why would VW create two cars so similar? I fail to think that the Passat will get much attention as the Jetta is built on the same platform and shares so much mechanically. Does VW think we will purchase the Passat because it has better engine ...

Can you say "SPEEDY LITTLE BUGGER"?

by ALEX21st
Jul 27 '06 - Updated Aug 02 '06

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fast little bugger, Stereo totally rocks, and the trunk is enormous
Cons: the cup holders aren't as snug as we'd like them to be
The Bottom Line: Great price and package. If you're just starting out and safety, craftsmanship and reliability are your main concerns, then this is the vehicle for you.

Mom, I definitely have you to thank for convincing me that VWs where the way to go. My husband and I have loved the whole Jetta experience and were not too excited when my parents suggested a Jetta. After searching and testing driving car after car we ...

So Far So Good..........

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Very smooth and quiet ride, great mileage, good brakes, nice styling.
Cons: A German car made in Mexico?!!!
Got this car to replace a 2004 Honda Civic and was quite amazed at how comfortable and quiet the Jetta is. The base engine is a bit thrashy but still much better than the Civic was and I'm getting 32 mpg combined while using the A/C much of the time! Now if only VW could even come close to the reliability of Honda I'd be a VW owner for life.

Near luxury ride???? I think NOT!
by lagunite
Jul 08 '05
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No
Pros: Safety features, large trunk, decent styling.
Cons: Poor audio, questionable build quality, and above all -- a truly uncomfortable ride.
I like the looks, the roominess, the decent mileage, low emissions and the safety features. The radio and associated speakers leave a lot to be desired. Build quality could be better. The steering is nice and reasonably tight, but the ride is about the worst I've ever experienced in a car of this class. It was a nice, solid Teutonic ride for the first thousand or so miles, then the suspension loosened and all hell broke loose. I don't know how anyone could describe the ride in my car as comfortable. The words I would use are: uneven, bumpy, clunky and jerky. Based on the ride alone, if I knew a couple months ago what I know now, I would NOT buy this car again. I'd go with a nice Honda, Nissan, Toyota or even Mazda. Although I know it'll hurt my resale value by saying this -- and it isn't simple buyer's remorse, it's knowledge about how the car really feels -- if I wouldn't lose a bundle, I'd actually trade it in today. I hate riding in it that much.

What a car

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Wheels, Engine, Seats, Suspension, Body Kit...
Cons: The backordered seat cover. A little difficult to drive smoothly.
I love my car. Unfortunately, so does the body shop. I had my car for six weeks before I was hit by a drunk driver. It's been in the body shop ever since (six weeks and counting). The problem: the car has seat-mounted airbags (which saved my passenger from injury), but because the car is no longer made and has such special seats (Recaros with GLI embroidering), the seat covers are not readily available. They are back-ordered. I want my car back.

Overall though, I have no regrets of buying this car. It is absolutely an amazing drive. I traded in a 98 Passat 1.8T for it. What a difference. The Passat is far roomier and cushier, but the GLI just begs to be driven, and driven fast and hard. The wheels, the suspension, the seats, the turbo, the 6-speed tranny. I want my car back.
