Pros: hands on look at volcanoes, easily accessible, interesting exhibits in visitor center Cons: only one cinder cone is accessible...
At Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument you get a chance to wander among the lava flows and gaze at the cinder cones from the youngest volcano on the Colorado Plateau. It was only 900 years ago that Sunset Crater erupted, spewing lava and cinders ...
Pros: Unusual geological formations and unique sight- seeing Cons: You can't climb to the top of the crater!
Located just a few minutes northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is a 3,040 acre preserve that showcases the remains of a once active volcanic area. This large cinder cone rises about 1,000 feet from the desert floor ...
Pros: Unreal, unique, and fun. Cons: May be hot(90'F) in the summer.
Sunset Crater National Monument is one of my local playgrounds. Situated in the high Ponderosa Pine forests near Flagstaff, Arizona at 7,000 feet.
Featuring recent obvious volcanic activity, hiking trails, camping areas, and close proximity to two...
On a summer trip out west, I decided, as a sort of afterthought, to stop at this national park. When you go to Sunset Crater Volcano near Flagstaff, Arizona you also get to see Wupatki for free. I ended up liking Wupatki indian ruins better. And, since...
My family was on the way home from our vacation when we rounded a curve on an Arizona Highway (don't remember which one since I was a kid then), and all of us gasped at the beautiful sight of Sunset Crater looming in front of us. We soon found a...

Pros: Scoria Lives - Makes me think of Taco Bell Cons: None - a very nice park.
Sunset Crater is on of the most recent volcanically active areas in the lower 48. It erupted just over 900 years ago, and
left behind a classic cinder cone volcano, lava tubes, and Aa Aa lava flows. Anyone would find the raw beauty of this park a place to behold. The combination of high elevation and the Ponderosa Pine forest make this an oasis in the summer time heat of Arizona. Worth a look before or after the Grand Canyon - it is right on the way if you take the eastern route to the canyon from Flagstaff. Also take a look at Wapataki while there. Does not take a lot of time, but it is worth the hike up to Lenox Crater.
No it is not Sunset Crater, BUT the trip up to Lenox is very steep in its own right, but also very beautiful.
