Self-indulgent self-loathing going nowhere

by Stephen_Murray Stephen_Murray is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Movies, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Nov 04 '06
Pros: Gallo cut 1/4th,
Cons: but should have cut 3/4ths or more
"The Brown Bunny" is, IMHO, not the worst movie ever. Roger Ebert called the first cut of iit the worst movie ever shown at Cannes, and the panel of critics convened by Screen International, the British trade paper, gave the movie the lowest rating in ...

Quiet Desperation: Vincent Gallo's THE BROWN BUNNY

by xxxxer xxxxer is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Movies, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Sep 11 '04
Pros: It is a piece of cinematic art; hardcore sex in an American film (good Lord!)
Cons: It is agonizingly slow and tedious; a few problems in Gallo's approach
After a seemingly endless stretch sitting in a darkened theater, the two-screen Roxy Theater in Philadelphia, the lights finally came down and the audience settled in for a film that has achieved a kind of infamy that is almost unheard of today. The ...

Watch Chloe Sevigny Suck Vincent Gallo's D*ck in "The Brown Bunny

by thevoid99 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Sep 19 '04
Pros: Some Fine Moments in Gallo's Direction, Cinematography, & Cast.
Cons: Extremely Slow that It Comes Off in a Very Self-Indulgent & Pretentious Way.
The 2003 Cannes Film Festival in the French Riviera wasn’t one of the most memorable of festivals despite some top-notch films from France’s Francois Ozon with his international hit film “Swimming Pool” and Gus Van Sant’s ...

The Brown Bunny: Little Rabbit Fufu, but with a blowjob

by trust12345 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Aug 27 '04
Pros: Lyrical cinematography; Gallo's unraveling; Chloë Sevigny; soundtrack
Cons: Borders on pretentious; self-indulgent; poor distribution of drama
There is an early poem by Samuel Beckett that for me perfectly captures the mood and self-conscious mournfulness of Vincent Gallo’s second feature, The Brown Bunny: I would like my love to die and the rain to be falling on the ...

The worst movie I've ever seen ~ The Brown Bunny

by dramastef, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Sep 26 '06
Pros: the now-infamous oral sex scene was non-gratuitous
Cons: entirely too many cons to list in 15 words
It’s official. After four days of thinking about it, I’ve come to the decision that I have finally seen The. Worst. Movie. Ever. Created. After watching it over the weekend, I thought that maybe, just maybe, The Brown Bunny might ...

THE BROWN BUNNY--VINCENT GALLO'S SONG OF MYSELF

by jarvococker , Sep 13 '04
Pros: Haunting scenes of expansive nothingness; Chloe Sevigny a lovely mouthful; Vincent Gallo's spooky sincerity
Cons: Indulgent, repetitive and narcissistic to the extreme; Limp finale (All evidence to contrary)
Upon entering a film at Cannes, it certainly helps for marketing purposes if a film maker can come away with a Jury Prize, an honorable mention or (Fingers crossed) a Palme D'Or. Not horrible press. Really hostile, career ending, pill swallowing press. ...

The Brown Bunny: Vincent Gallo, Uneasy Rider

by factotum Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Nov 07 '05
Pros: The sex scene has shock value
Cons: interminable and pretentious
The great Lenny Bruce once explained that there was a distinct difference between "A piece of art with a little shit in the middle" and "a big piece of shit with a little art in the middle." If you are looking for an example of the latter, than ...

Watching Vincent Gallo Bury the Bunny

by strictlypoison , Feb 06 '06
Pros: Perhaps the most emotional film I've ever seen.
Cons: Moviegoers tend to avoid all but the most sugary of emotions.
As far as pretentious art films go, Gallo has made himself a perennial contender for the all-time crown with this film. While his minimalist near-masterpiece debut, Buffalo 66, showed him to be a brash visionary with a my-way-or-else attitude, Brown ...

Stealth Porn

by fork_eye , Aug 28 '05
Pros: "Road trip" scenery and Chloe Sevigny's oral skills.
Cons: A lazy effort (in my opinion) for Vincent Gallo, who is capable of much more.
I never would have paid any attention to Vincent Gallo's 2003 film The Brown Bunny except for the fact that I enjoyed Gallo's previous solo project (1998's Buffalo 66) very much. By "solo project" I mean that Gallo wrote, directed, and ...

The Brown Bunny's Payoff May or May Not Be Worth Enduring the Film

by easterbradford , Sep 12 '04
Pros: A tittilating sex scene is the highlight of the picture.
Cons: Complete lack of character motivation and an inability to communicate purpose renders viewer bored.
*note - don't read this if you don't want a surprise ending to be given away* I had heard of Vincent Gallo's "The Brown Bunny" many months ago because of it's extremely poor reception at Cannes. It only resurfaced in my general realm of knowledge ...

Brown Bunny can barely be called a movie.

by rmurray847 , Apr 20 '08
Pros: None
Cons: About as dreary, boring, indulgent and pointless as a movie could be.
Bud is sad. The motor-cycle racer played by Vincent Gallo is carrying some sort of grief. We know this because he spends a lot of time driving his van cross country and looking unhappy. He conveys this unhappiness much of the time by rubbing his face in ...

An art film... that's a little too abstract

by surfur , Mar 15 '08
Pros: Sevigny touches us deep, it leads to a powerful finale. And Bud's emptiness and longing.
Cons: Too many empty scenes without meaning or suspense. Characters lacking entry points.
by Dane Youssef "THE BROWN BUNNY" plays out like an Andy Warhol-inspired exercise that was warped into a vanity project. It's like a home movie on a family road trip where nothing is really going on and whoever has the camera is just killing ...

satisfied.
by idanceatdinner ,Sep 20 '04
Pros: his direction, audio, performances by Gallo/Sevigny, overall feel of it when it's over
Cons: will not appeal to as vast of crowd, a bit slow for most
leaving the theatre i was slightly torn on how to feel about this film. as a fan of Gallo, i did enjoy it. quite a lot actually. however, i believe that this film will feel much less accessible to an audience outside of his followers, as opposed to Buffalo 66. i saw six or seven people walk out and even more nodding off. this is a film that you have to be patient for, you have to be willing to open your mind a bit, willing to accept the quiet and lack of wit sassy dialogue and humor that was seen prior to this in his other work. even after i got past those things, it still is a bit self indulgent, a bit dragging.

like i said, i did enjoy the film. his direction is impeccable. however beware, this is nothing, NOTHING like Buffalo 66, so if that is what you're hoping to see in this, don't waste your time or money because you will be disappointed.

it is nice to see another side of him, and it really does have Gallo written all over it, just in a different way.
