Pros: The themes, the character development, and the direction Cons: Some people may have trouble with the lack of plot
While some criticize Magnolia for the lack of plot, I applaud it for this reason. The character development and relations are sufficient in bringing across the themes of the movie. Instead of focusing on a primary story, Magnolia shows events that...

Pros: excellent directing/writing Cons: confusing and sometimes unclear
Many people going to see this movie have simply gone because of the media hype. I, for one saw it because it looked suspiciously like a strange move. It, sure enough did turn out to be kind of strange.
The plot was mixed in and out of...

Pros: acting, cinematography, music Cons: none
I venture to say "Magnolia" is my favorite film of all time. It says more about the human experience than any other films I've seen. It shows the pain of life and the beauty of life simultaneously. The actors flawlessly demonstrate their...

Pros: Film goes by fast Cons: It is three hours long
With it's trailers that told nothing of the movie. And the characters that seemed to be completely separate from one another, Magnolia was not what I expected. In truth, I expected a bad Tom Cruise movie. What I got was an incredible film. ...

Pros: Original visual tricks; earnestness Cons: Banal; uninteresting characters and plot; much too long
At its best, "Magnolia" can be described as a sprawling, clever film about messed up family relations. At its worst, it is a mish-mash, a parade of flat characters, and a failure--though an earnest and ambitious one.
The movie's...

Pros: Great Cast Cons: Length
I really enjoyed this film. The whole cast was superb. I really liked Tom Cruise. He played his role with a zest and appeal that made the film even better. The film is a little on the long side , but it is well worth your time. I recommend this film...

Pros: Great acting Cons: long, disturbing, boring, undeveloped plot, no big pay off in the end
Magnolia attempts to display how all of our lives are connected and intertwined in an elaborate array of webs and strings to such an extent that we cannot even comprehend. It shows how these events all trace back to our past, for that is where the nodes...

Pros: uh, are there any? Cons: boring, way too long
I was very disappointed in this movie. My boyfriend convinced me to go, saying he had heard it got good reviews from critics. However, I nearly left the theater half way through.
First, it is very very long. Over 3 hours is far to long to...

What the??
by lisarowe ,Nov 06 '03
Pros: The acting was great, as was the cast. Cons: It is very long, and a bit confusing at first.
The first time I saw Magnolia, I was so bemused, all I could say was "what the??". It certainly wasn't in my top ten list at the time, but I kept thinking about it, and felt the urge to watch it again... and again... and again! By the third time round, I was really starting to understand the point it was trying to make, and appreciate what a great film Magnolia really was. And now... well, it's number five on my list of top ten movies of all time. The acting was great, Tom Cruise won a golden globe for his role, but I honestly dont think anyone (of the main cast) was any better that anyone else. The film follows twelve main people over one day as their lives interwine and collide. But is it all just a matter of chance? This is one of the main questions the film asks. It demonstrates how these strange (and ussumingly coincidental) things happen all the time. I love it, Magnolia is really a very smart movie.

excellent movie
by kittywaymoc ,Jan 08 '06
Pros: Human natures aspects shown in a creative way. Cons: Writing could have been better
Hi, my IQ is 164, unlike the previous negative reviews, I found the film to be both deep and moving. Very human and at times extremely realistic to human natures most dark points.
If you are cold and unfeeling, this is not the movie for you. If you are an emotional, feeling, loving and intelligent person, you will like the film.

Terrible - a disaster
by homega ,Mar 02 '05
Pros: None. Cons: Too long, too boring, no plot, insulting, endless.
This movie did not make any sense. It's a day in the life of a bunch of average people in L.A. none of whom have anything to do with each other. There was no plot. Nothing came together at the end. It was way too long. There was far too much profanity, even for those who are used to profanity. It tries too hard to be existential or artistic and was actually moronic instead. This movie has absolutely no social or redeeming value. This is a movie for extremely jaded, hardcore movie watchers who have seen it all and are looking for something extremely weird and don't mind something pointless and boring. It seems to have been made by Hollywood insiders who have seen it all and think they know what Elite movie watchers will want to see.

A slice of dramatic American life
by charlie419 ,Oct 11 '04
Pros: Strong performances out of the entire cast. Cons: A few long-winded scenes that could've been dumbed down and would've had the same effect.
I rented this movie at the Library last week, and didn't watch it until I was sure I wasn't going to be disturbed (being as it's a pretty long movie). What I saw was very very good, a movie that actually lived up to the hype all my friends gave it. I think the intersecting stories were all well-done, and I never felt bored in the 3+ hours I spent watching it.
Tom Cruise certainly deserved the Golden Globe he got for his role, but I was surprised Julianne Moore was snubbed (didn't even get a nomination). I thought she was very strong, even more so than Cruise.
And as most people would probably be the first time watching it, I was more than confused with the "rain" scene towards the end. Luckily, IMDB cleared that up in a hurry, and looking back on it, it makes a good deal of sense, although it's still clearly preposterous. But I still enjoyed the movie a great deal. B+.
