Pros: Great acting, great script, directing and music about serious subject Cons: Depressing but sometimes life is
This is my first official participation in a Write-off although I think I ''broke in" to one when I was a newbie and didn't have a clue about what write-offs were. This movie write-off is the brainchild of destinys_child. We are to write of a movie...
Pros: Dark, somber, and often honest and realistic portrait of alcoholism. Cons: preachy at times, overacted at others.
Any time Im feeling miserable and hopeless, I need to remind myself that, at least, Im not one of those who drown all my sorrows in alcohol. I really wouldnt understand why someone would do so -- for one thing, alcohol is so expensive, ...
Pros: Seeing Jack Lemmon and Jack Klugman, more often known for comedy, in dramatic roles. Cons: No happy ending for Lee Remick.
When you see The Days of Wine and Roses, the 1962 film starring Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick and Jack Klugman, you get a sense that there was much more partying in corporate America, and three-martini lunches were the rule more than the exception. You...
Pros: Lemmon and Remick's riveting portrayals of the effect alcohol has on the human spirit. Cons: The genre isn't often represented in such a wide release venue.
Very often in movies, people with drinking problems are portrayed as comical characters who we can laugh at. There's Frank Fontaine as Crazy Guggenheim, Dudley Moore as Arthur, and countless other instances where we're encouraged to laugh at a character ...
Pros: cast, script, direction Cons: can be melodramatic, mood is unhappy
Alcoholism is an excellent dramatic theme. The director is given many ideas to work from. The personalities and fortunes of the characters can be contrasted before and after they have been drinking. The effects on their health, both mental and physical,...
This 1962 film directed by Blake Edwards does not paint a pretty picture of a young couple and their alcohol abuse. Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick portrayed an upwardly mobile couple living in the fast lane of success. They begin drinking socially, as was...
Pros: entertaining, real, good message, filming, drama Cons: sad ending (if they bother you)
This is a very serious film about very serious probelms in modern society. For those of you who write off a movie as being bad because it was done in black and white "back when people were stupid"; watch this one. I am positive you will be changed....
Pros: Very well made drama. Fine and realistic performances. Cons: Sad movie, unhappy ending.
For the time period in which this film was made (1962) I consider it a very strong and true to life movie. Thinking of substance abuse, one might not consider two people in love, and later with a child. Then again, it can happen to anyone.
