Pros: excellent performances delivered with raw emotion; interesting cover choices Cons: none
After three studio albums of aggressive and at times abrasive music, Nirvana stripped away that punk edge for their 1993 MTV Unplugged concert. What remained revealed Nirvana as the true musicians they were. As awesome as their noisy ...
Pros: Emotional, introspective, intelligent and creative... Cons: The posthumous release...
Of all the albums I grew to love and appreciate while in high school, one stand out. No, I’m not talking about Stone Temple Pilots or Alice in Chains. I’m not speaking specifically of Nevermind. Nirvana, in my humble opinion, was at the...
Pros: Nirvana's equivalent of Nebraska, Blood On The Tracks etc. Cons: Let me get back to you on that.
The unplugged album, like the "Grunge explosion", was a hallmark of early 1990s rock and roll. Like the Northwest music movement, it produced a lot of music, yet it only left behind a few truly enduring albums. Eric Clapton's classic Unplugged is ...
This marks the third time I've tried to write a review of Nirvana Unplugged in New York. What makes it so hard to exactly pinpoint the magic and the fear behind this release? Well, for one thing, nearly half of the songs in this performance weren't even ...
Pros: amazing unplugged performance, excellent choice of cover songs Cons: Kurt Cobain's dead, no other unplugged performance has reached the same standard
Welcome to the nineties, or should I say early nineties, where something has changed the state of rock. Nirvana have brought the state of mainstream away from hair metal into grunge, a genre which usually refers to the Seattle scene back in 1991 ...
On November 18th 1993, the kings of 'grunge' stepped into a small studio filled with fans to perform an acoustic set. The traditionalist would have expected, or wanted, them to play the obvious likes of Smells Like Teen Spirit and Heart Shaped Box. But ...
Pros: Nirvana Live In Your Sitting Room. Cons: The Dying Of The Light.
Who would have ever thought that an album of acoustic Nirvana songs would work. The release of this album in the wake of Kurt Cobain's suicide no doubt boosted sales but it proved without doubt the inherent power of Nirvana's music. It also highlighted...
Pros: Very powerful and emotional, fair level of musicianship. Cons: Cons? You have to be f*cking kidding me!
I wrote in one of my earlier reviews that In Utero is the masterpiece of Nirvana’s body of work (although there’s really not a lot to choose from). Well, after going back and listening to MTV: Unplugged In New York, I may have to admit that I was...
When Kurt Cobain stepped upon the stage to record this album who would have known that it would be his last gift to the world. When Nirvana breached mainstream music in the early 90's it set off a spark that ignighted the world. You can hear that spark...
Pros: Kurt Cobain, just about all the songs, chilling All Apologies song Cons: A couple songs could have been better
When Nirvana agreed to perform all their major hits from their long-lasting collection of grunge albums, many people questioned them. Were they going to be able to pull off songs like About a Girl or All Apologies on acoustics? Nirvana answered that ...
Forget all those conspiracy rumours of how record exec David Geffen wanted him offed because he refused to record again, or how wife Courtney Love hired a hit man to collect on the insurance. If you really want to know the reason why Kurt Cobain died,...
Pros: The performance of a lifetime by the rock legends. Cons: The end of the nirvana...
Nirvana. One word. One band. One man. This is Nirvana’s last album ever recorded, recorded a mere three months before the late, great Kurt Cobain took his life. And really, if he had to leave us so soon, it was with this album. The album is...
Pros: Some undeniable quality in the simplistic songwriting and emotional singing Cons: Simplistic songs which, unlike the studio versions, tend to become boring
Nirvana were the leaders of grunge because their simplistic tunes managed to have all the catchiness of pop tunes which gave them a wide appeal while remaining raw and powerful, meaning the rock faithful were also on their side. From their debut...
Pros: Shows the group in a much better musical setting than their studio setting. Cons: "On A Plain" is a little weak.
Ok, I was a teenager when "Smells like Teen Spirit" exploded on the scene and changed the popular music world forever. I was still into metal even in those days - But I tried. I went out and bought Nevermind, and I didn't like it (Ok, I liked...
Pros: Everything from track 4 up. Cons: Track 3 down.
This is part of my first write-off, the Ten Obstructions Write-Off. Guildenstern (yes, of Epinions fame) sums it up perfectly: "You might at first wonder why we need a collection of Nirvanas songs in an acoustic unplugged version. After all, the ...
Pros: "Nirvana Toned Down" as one critic put it, with the beauty really coming out. Cons: Maybe I don't have glasses but...
You really have to admit that when you strip a band of it's distortion pedal, give it some acoustics and give it only one electronic device - the almighty mic - their talent will show. And that's really what Nirvana had a lot of: fuzz. It was distorted ...
Pros: arrangements, guitars, vocals, songwriting Cons: inconsistent, acoustic format constricts their style
When it became known that Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, had committed suicide, MTV knew what to do. They showed their recent 'Unplugged' Nirvana special, over and over again.
When the acoustic concert became available on CD, it...
When the "MTV Unplugged In New York" was released in November of 1994, it had been months since Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain died of an apparent suicide (or murder). Since then, Nirvana had disbanded and members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic...
Pros: Some beautiful renditions of classic Nirvana songs, and some very good covers.
Cons: Some very poor, misguided attempts at being forcefully acoustic.
You might at first wonder why we need a collection of Nirvana’s songs in an acoustic unplugged version. After all, the essence of their work is captured in the raucous energy of “Nevermind”, songs which, lets face it, weren’t characterised precisely by...
Pros: Emotionally revealing and pleading songs, performed in true acoustic sense Cons: Pennyroyal Tea and On A Plain sound different than on the album versions
Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana changed the face of rock in the 7 short years they were around. During that time they put out an album which is still regarded as arguably the best rock recording ever (Nevermind), put Seattle on the music scene map, and...
Pros: wonderful melodies and re-arrangments, an all around incredible, awe-inspiring performance Cons: If you can find a con on this album, you're a better man than me
Back in 1991, when Nirvana broke into the mainstream with Smells Like Teen Spirit, some critics called them nothing more than noise, untalented hacks who were poseurs to the throne of the best rock act in the world at the time. However,...
Choosing an album is an easy task but enjoying the album, singing the songs, remembering the lyrics and understanding the feelings of the song writer can be a tough one when the music just isn't clear.
Pros: Beautiful Acoustic Renditions of Classic Nirvana Songs Cons: The reason why this is the only way we will hear Cobain's voice again
Tragedy has always struck the populace without warning and with total disregard to human emotion. April 8th 1994 was indeed a tragic day for me, for people I knew, and for another million of those I never knew and never will.
Pros: Beautiful, melodic album with classy covers Cons: "All Apologies" is out of place.
November, 1993, was a terrible time for Nirvana. Tabloids had been going crazy over Kurt's rumored heroin addiction, they were slapped in the face with how many so-called fans jumped the bandwagon with the fanbase-alienator "In Utero," and Courtney Love...
Pros: Highly evocative singing from Cobain, surprising musicianship from the band Cons: More than a few songs which are not actually "unplugged."
When Nirvana took the stage to film their Unplugged set for MTV, I'm sure there were the detractors, who thought they would crash and burn. I was one of them. I thought they were basically a bad band hiding behind alot of distortion and...
I am not the hugest Nirvana fan in the world. I do not think Kurt Cobain was God incarnate. I do not think he was the genius writer people claimed him to be. I thought Nirvana was too loud, and expressed the kind of emotion 13-year-old boys experience...
Pros: Personal, Touching, Intimate sounds Cons: Not long enough, Background vocals almost drowned out.
On a cold brisk New York evening a few musicians gathered on a soundstage in order to perform thier own rendition of a few cover songs, and even a couple of thier own original songs. this could have happened a hundred times in a hundred different...
Pros: some great moments of what Nirvana could've been, a range of songs Cons: some songs are painful
Nirvana did an "Unplugged" concert for MTV right before Kurt Cobain's death. On "Unplugged in New York," they shine for certain songs. They incorporate accordians, cello, and acoustic guitar along with some great blues guitar. It...
Pros: A full album of great acoustic tracks and amazing live recordings. Cons: None.
When I first listened to Nirvanas Unplugged album I took off my headphones and just thought to myself. Wow. This CD is 100% pure gold. I had heard of the concert and I had heard that it was possibly the most touching acoustic performance ever recorded ...
Pros: Good cover songs, first time acoustic guitar performance. good songs at the beggining and end. Cons: too many slow songs in the middle.
Who would have expected that the noisiest band of the 90"s, the top hated band by parents could come out and create music so soothing and touching. This album is deep, Kurt finally puts out his sensitive and gentle side. Starting from their first album ...
Pros: Intimate rearrangements; not saturated with hits Cons: None
If there was ever an album that evokes the spirit of passion and genius of the grunge movement, Nirvana's MTV Unplugged set is it. Devoid of the anarchic noise that propelled the band to monolithic heights in both the commercial and cultural spectrums,...
Pros: Every song. Kurt's goodbye to the world. Cons: Absolutely nothing
This is the last record that we received from the most amazing band to emerge in the last 25 years or so. It had a very eerie feel to it and looking back, you can really see and hear the anguish in Kurt's voice. This is one of the absolute greatest ...
Pros: Great acoustics with great mellodies Cons: well......... nothing really.
Well what can I say about this album, I'll start with saying that this is the album that got me hooked on Nirvana. Many will say that Nevrmind is Nirvana's best and I don't disagree, but I do think that this is the album you should listen to, before you...
Pros: Powerful "Oh Me", "Lake of Fire", "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" Cons: Gloom-fests "Pennyroyal Tea", "Dumb", "Something in the Way"
This record is a historical document. Nirvana were talented, but they were also in the right place at the right time. If "Nevermind" had been released in 1985, I really doubt it would've broken through into the mainstream. But when it was released, in...
Pros: It tells a lot more about what was happening to Kurt. Cons: nothing.
I do own the cd but that is just there to remind me of the mind blowing show that they did. The cd just tells the story of what kurt what kurt was goin through but it leaves out the images of his face and how much soul he was putting in each song. If you...
Pros: Nirvana at it's tranquil best Cons: Too short!
MTV Unplugged in New York deftly illustrates how much talent Kurt Cobain and Nirvana really had at the highlight of their brief recording career. This album was recorded on November 18, 1993, Kurt Cobain's suicide followed a mere six months later...
I was in a guitar shop several years ago surrounded by musicians and would be musicians looking at buying guitars. There was a boy in the shop buying a guitar. He picked it up a shiny red Fender, looked it over, sat on a nearby stool and started playing...
Pros: the songs "lake of fire" and "plateau" (#12 and #10) Cons: that kurt died. no more concerts!!!!!!!! :(
when i bought this album i was totally shocked at how much nirvana puts into their songs. i love the way they put their songs together. if you listen, the lyrics are stories of kurt cobain and his "miserable" life, mostly with courtney. there...
Pros: Just a perfect performance Cons: Too bad there's not more songs
I am much more into hardcore than grunge. However Nirvana has always been one of my favorite bands. I've gone through 3 copies of Nevermind. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the Kurt Cobain was gone. I was legitimately shook up.
Pros: Raw, Conquering, Original, Plastic, great Cons: none
Can you say Meat Puppets, Sure Nirvana is Great, but you know they are good when they can take songs from another group that only had 1 hit and turn them into huge hits... It shows Nirvana had Talent, Kurt Cobain had Talent, and in the world of Rock and...
Released months after Kurt Cobain died (under what many still say are very unusual circumstances), this album is a brilliant addition to an already great set of albums. It shows another versatile side to an already unique sound. While some critics like...
Pros: Wide Variety, Wonderful Vocals, Good Track Progression Cons: Lacks Nirvana's electric stuff (well it is unplugged)
I really like Unplugged, because it really shows the range of music that the band could perform. For example: How many other grunge bands do you know who will use an accordion in their songs?
Pros: Sounds very natural its like a different band they are Nirunplugvana Cons: They didnt play more songs
So this is what happens when the power goes out. Normally you would think Nirvana and electricity go together like Payless shoes and low quality. Maybe someone stole their regular instruments I just don’t know, but all said this is a very good album....
while other groups like sublime and the Beatles have shown us what a mistake it can be to release new music after the band's leader is dead... nirvana pull it off with flying colors... while no particular song on this album stands out as truly great......
This album for me caprtured two of my favorite bands, Nirvana and The Meat Puppets. So it was a great CD to add to my collection. I watched the performance on TV and new right away that I had to have it. So I went out and got it. This was one of the...
I am not sure if I can put my feelings about this Album into words,
but I am gonna try!
Live In New York.....Oh My God did Kurt surprice the world, and MTV
when he not only played other bands songs, but his special guest were
the Meat...
Pros: great songs full of emotion and meaning Cons: it is live
Well what can I say,!!!NIRVANA RULES!!!! Ok I just had to get that out.
Now for the album Unplugged in New York, this album stands out from all of nirvana's albums because it is so different.
Pros: The whole Album is GREAT!!!!!!! Cons: NOTHING!!!!
This is Nirvana's best album. For fans of Nirvana this is just another wonderful album to add to their collection. For those of you who don't really like Nirvana or who don't really know about them you will love this one. They take a step back from...
Pros: The addition of aucustics was a nice change Cons: Kurt's Dead :(
Of all the CD's I own, Nirvana Unplugged: Live in New York is the most listened to CD that I own. It never ceases to amaze me the ammount to focus and energy that Kurt Cobain puts into his lyrics and music. Kurts exuedes raw energy into a single album...
Pros: The soulful side of Kurt is easily heard. Cons: The Meat Puppets TRIED to sing with Kurt.
This album was and still is one of my favorite Nirvana CDs. In every song you hear Kurt bearing his soul to his fans. There are none of the usual loud guitars and drums, so you can really hear Kurt's soulful voice and the strong emotion he put into the...
This album is, in terms of serious albums, the best I own. Cobain and the band did beyond a perfect job in their selection of understated mellow alternative rock songs. Songs like "Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam," with an accordion being...
Since I first listened to Nirvana´s Unplugged CD, I have been asking myself: why do all rock bands must play an unplugged concert at MTV to get there? Why did Kurt Cobain do that? And, finally, how does a band that has done the best album ever (and here...
Pros: Great songs on the album and lengthy Cons: none
I bought this album because I heard the first album, Bleach and loved the songs from there. Then I had my friend make me a mix tape of some of the songs on other albums and they were great. I love this album because it's live and you can tell that...
Pros: You get to hear the greatest at his work Cons: Wanting more!!!!!
This cd is one of the best in my collection. You get to hear Kurt in one of his best acoustic performances. His voice is like butter. Between most of the songs you get to hear him make little comments and even once joke around! You get to hear them...
Pros: Brilliant transition of grunge to acoustic, increible singing Cons: somehting in the way may become a bit boring for "non hardcore" fans
Kurt cobain was brilliant. i think we have all come to realize that now that hes gone. Unplugged in New york does nothing short of prove this point. who else could have taken blood wrenching white static and turn it into an incredible acoustic...
Nirvana Unplugged...it just doesn't get any better by apc53 ,Jul 06 '06
Pros: The album has more emotion than a room full of women on the rag. Cons: People bash this album because some of the best songs aren't even theirs.
How do I even begin to describe Nirvana Unplugged? There is so much more to this release than any other in recent history. This recording was Nirvana's gift to the world of music. This recording has everything, including the heart and soul Nirvana always put into their music.
My favorite song on the album is "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" This song is a prime example of the pure passion Kurt Cobain could put into his music. And just like many of his other songs, it almost sounds like he just wants to break down and let all his emotions out. And the same thing happens to me when I listen
Say what you want about Nirvana. Love them or hate them, anyone can appreciate the raw passion and soul of Nirvana Unplugged.
Shame It Only Happened Once by aftermarketx ,May 20 '06
Pros: Best version of some songs ever, and so many hits! Cons: Come As You Are sounded bland acoustic, (Kurt also missed a cord in it)
This was Kurt's masterpiece in the way that he wanted everything acoustic and Cat-Stevens-like and Ledbelly style, This show was one of the greatest moments of Kurt's life reguardless weather he felt so or not, Great versions of songs that don't sound like re-runs of the hits, it keeps your ears glued and makes you feel like you are at a coffee joint experiencing a new kind of music with Kurt as the conductor, Dave also shined this night and it showed how great of a musician he is and what was to come. Second best behind In Utero, beats Nevermind only because of the number of hits from In Utero that were included, and in the case of On A Plain this was the best performance existing even! (After all the bootlegs I have heard and not to mention Box Set) I only wish his Come As You Are performance was not so bland in acoustic only.
MTV Unplugged, So Unique. by lemonhead575 ,Nov 26 '05
Pros: Great songs, great band, great performance, amazing album! Kurt has some funny speaking bits. Cons: Nothing.
This album was definitely so different and unique from anything else they have done. This shows the soft, sensitive side of Kurt and Nirvana. Nirvana was a grunge band, not an acoustic rock band, but this piece of art shows that they could have been any kind of band they wanted to be. Nirvana is one of the best rock bands that have ever been, and this album is great!!
Proving that Nirvana ARE the greatest ever band by gabrielzao ,Feb 22 '04
Pros: The essence of Nirvana in a nutshell Cons: It's annoyingly expensive in English record shops.
I spent most of my teenage life getting really angry at my parents, conforming to be a misfit and trying to be a rebel. To be fair Nirvana summed up everything I wanted to be, and this album sums up everything that Nirvana were.
Essentially when buying this album one is buying a slice of pure, untamed Nirvana. From Cobain's screeching vocals on "Where did you sleep last night" to Novoselics smooth bass riffs on "Come as you are".
If I had to distinguish one Nirvana album to own, this would be it. But nobody should own just one!
Pros: Beautiful, nostalgiac, meaningful. Cons: not good to listen to if you're not in the right mood.
This albums shows that under Nirvana's abrasive distortion, there are some beautiful melodies. In this album, you can see "what's behind Kurt Cobain's iron curtain". This album shows that Nirvana were really songwriters and not just a "noise" band.
