Pros: It may be the equivalent of a literary Enquirer--for those who like that kind of stuff Cons: They don't always have articles fit to print
The feuding, back stabbing and mean-spiritedness that broke out at Zoetrope All Story: online submissions site has now spilled over into Salon.com. There is an article online as of February 22 in which a member of the Zoetrope writer's site, an admitted...
Pros: Timely, interesting, diversity, many topics covered, good grasp on pop culture Cons: Layout of site sometimes overloads you with information
Every since I discovered Salon.com a few years ago, I've been a faithful reader. I don't tend to read every article, but I skim the headlines and check out things that look interesting, and there almost always is something. Right now I am especially...
Pros: Witty, Stinging humor to cherish by the bucket full! Cons: None, we think "she" is a perfect human being!
Dottie, Dottie, Dottie!!
If you haven't heard the chanting of "her" name lately, softly swelling behind the cubicles in your dot.com world, then you are missing out! "Dottie Downturn" as "she" likes to call...
Pros: Horowitz, Paglia, evolving libertarianism, and some great writing Cons: A teensy bit precious and pretentious
Somehow, despite its panting aspirations - or because of them - one can't really see salon.com as a salon. Voltaire would be out of place. Shoot, so would Talleyrand. ('But, master, what the devil are you doing with that rabble?'). And Mme de Stael...
Pros: informative, opinionated, diverse Cons: sometimes prints pretentious/self-absorbed articles
I first found Salon.com when I was searching for information on the best Bruce Springsteen albums to buy. I clicked on a link that took me to one Salon writer's nostalgic but insightful review of Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town. From there, I...
Pros: variety of good writing Cons: some columnists a little too fascinated by themselves
First, a disclaimer: I have had an essay published in Salon. As a writer, I'm pleased with them: the editor actually improved the piece, and they pay promptly.
That said, I look at Salon regularly, but I never read all of it. I skim. There are...
Pros: great writing, incisive analysis, wacky subjects Cons: wish the food section was more comprehensive but it's still young...
I am an unabashed fan of salon.com. I checked it out soon after it's inception when it still had lots of "buzz" due to the brash comments of the founders concerning what a successful destination they planned to turn it into.
Pros: It's free, Columnists are both intelligent and witty, New articles daily, Great comics Cons: Unfortunately it's not terribly portable.
I'm rarely one known for political savvy or any real interest in the news, but Salon.com regularly holds my interest, and I'm a regular visitor. One of the reasons for this is that it not only publishes serious articles about pressing matters,...
Pros: Great site...It has revamped its...Great reporting and writing.. Cons: Want to compare it with....(Go ahead)
This is truly one the online magazines that makes me think. What is particular about Salon.com is the troop of its writers, correspondents, travel writers, and all the others who are not afraid of asking the hard questions. It is as if you took two...
Pros: Bold alternative to the mainstream. Excellent writing. Unpredictable content. Cons: Trendy and a tad smugly superior
This is one of the most intelligent news and information sites I've come across. It combines the intellect and progressive nature of the metropolitan free presses with international and national coverage of news and culture. A tad USA-centric features...
Pros: Great news coverage. Cons: Only a couple new items per day.
Salon is one of the best mainstream news sources.
Their daily news features are excellent, and they have been willing to take on issues which the mainstream news has avoided (due to conflicts of interest with their advertisers) and many...
Pros: represents liberal side Cons: few conservative voices
Salon.com's claim to fame is being the biggest Clinton defender during impeachment. Salon broke stories on Rep. Henry Hyde's past affair and ran several stories on the so-called nefarious links between a conservative non-profit and anti-Clinton people in...
Pros: good writers, topical Cons: hard to search for past topics
A great deal of Salon is the measured style in which they give you information. The one thing that has set this web based "magazine" apart is that they have managed to get some known writers to contribute to it. The editors also do a very...
ultra left wing political agenda by mmlm01 ,Aug 31 '04
Pros: entertainment section (especially movie reviews) Cons: fine if you want an ultra left wing political agenda crammed down your throat
My subscription to Salon ends this month and I will not be renewing even though they recently offered me 18 months for the price of 12. Some of the magazines articles are well written, full of astute observances. Others are lighter fare, but still intelligently crafted and a pleasant diversion from my day.
Unfortunately, none of this can compensate for the ultra left-wing political leanings that the staff seems to share. I consider myself a moderate, and I do not belong to any political party, but this magazine was too much for me. There was a clear agenda that was pro gay marriage, pro abortion, anti-war, etc. Not what I want to read every day.
