Pros: Superb selection of fresh exotic fruits at reasonable prices. Cons: The shipping costs can run as much as 1/2 the cost of the fruit.
After having spent a week in Mexico last year, I discovered an exotic fruit that I had never eaten before. There are actually a number of subspecies of this fruit known generally as the Sapote. There is a black sapote which tastes similar to chocolate and a white or brown sapote, the one I tried, which tastes somewhat like caramel and has the consistency of a soft, ripe pear. There is even a small football sized one which is called Mamey. It looks like a sweet potato and tastes sort of like an almond-vanilla flavored sweet potato.
Suffice it to say, these fruits are hard to find at best. After searching, I was referred to Robert Is Here Fruit Stand. They were very helpful and made it easy for me to order 20 pounds (believe me, once you taste it, you'll know why) of the small caramel tasting sapotes (called sapodilla)
and two Mameys.
They arrived perfectly, without bruises and ripened to perfection. I can't wait to order them again.
