Pros: Cheap, QOS for VOIP, strong wireless signal Cons: Bear to configure, no Netgear support, documentation spotty, VPN didn't work

If you want VoIP, don't buy this router!!
by hpesta ,Sep 27 '07
Pros: Works great as a wireless router. Cons: Don't buy it for the VoIP adapter as it is a locked device.
First off, I am a neophyte VoIP user. I bought this router thinking that I could plug my cordless phone into it and use it with any popular VoIP service provider (as the promo touts) such as Vonage or CallCentric. I was wrong.
After a few emails to tech support at CallCentric (who was the provider I choose to go with after reading many good reviews about them), they informed me that the VoIP function on this router is locked and can only be used with certain providers. I emailed Netgear's tech support to find out which providers supported their router and they took two days to respond and didn't even answer my question!
After doing more searches on the internet as to who supported their router, I was only able to find a few VoIP companies in Australia and the UK; none in the U.S. .....very strange.
I feel completely mislead by NetGear's write-up on this product. If they don't support any VoIP providers in the U.S., they should have made this known in their product literature.
