Pros: Simple concept, targeted at women, 30 minutes, 3 times a week Cons: Not for serious workout-ers
I have always been what some people refer to as "well-endowed," but to be honest, I'm a bit more endowed than I would like. When I first heard of Curves for Women I thought, wow, if only I could cut down on my curves... the name appealed ...
Low-impact workout, women only, 30 minutes and you're done.
Cons: Expensive, no showers, no pool, smelled bad, poor ventilation
I see from some of the other reviews here that Curves for Women is pretty popular and well-liked. And I admit, the concept of a place where women can work out without a bunch of men leering at them was long overdue . . . here in Portland, Oregon we had a ...
Pros: It only take 30 minutes! Cons: If crowded, you might have to wait
My job as a first grade teacher builds up lots of stress and I need to release that stress so that I may do the best job possible. A friend told me about a new workout place that she was going to. It is called Curves.
Pros: cheaper than fully featured gyms, equipment simple to use, supportive ambience, sell is straightforward. Cons: absolutely no frills, owners/employees don't know that much sports physiology IMHO.

Pros: Its an effective, fun workout in a short time. Cons: The hours are limited.
I joined Curves about 2 1/2 months ago. I called to inquire about pricing and was given an accurate answer over the phone, unlike Lady of America. The price was $79.00 + tax to join and $29.00 + tax per month. The regular price is higher, but I think ...

I joined Curves because of promises that I would see results and that I would be weighted and measured monthly to record my progress. I was promised a trainer to ensure proper use of the machines. After the first work out, I never received help with ...
Pros: I can handle 3 workouts for only 30 minutes a week. Cons: The wait to get started and limited hours of operation.
I haven't done much besides walking in years, and my health care provider suggested I try something new, so I went in to check out Curves. I called and made an appointment for 5 p.m. on a Tuesday. I was greeted as I walked up to the desk and felt ...
Pros: There's a sense of community, great workout, easy to do & fast! Love it! Cons: None so far :)
My problem with regular gyms is the fact that I get bored REALLY quick. Every one's doing their own thing, wearing headphones or watching TV. I always found myself riding the stationary bike or treadmill, then trying to figure out how to work the huge ...
Pros: If you like to socialize, this is the place for you. Cons: Thirty minutes is not enough time to workout, workers talk to you while you exercise.
I joined curves for about three to four months back in 2006 at $39 dollars a month. You get to pay $29 if you sign a contract for a whole year. Wow, not much of an incentive, ten dollars. At first I liked it because I hadn't excercised for so long that ...
Pros: 30 minutes - fast, fun, effective Cons: None that I can think of! (I know, I'm biased!)
I've read all 148 reviews, and I just wanted to address some of the "cons." Training of staff - Just like at any other business, I suppose the training of the staff relies on the qualifications set up by the owner and the owner's follow thru. Curves ...
Pros: Nice staff, friendly atmosphere. Not intimidating. Affordable. Cons: Doesn't give you good weight loss results, despite their claims and testimonials.
I joined Curves about 3 months ago. During the first month, it was working a little bit- I lost a few pounds. But after that, even though I went 3 times a week, I didn't lose another pound! What I found out later from a friend of mine who works with a ...
Pros: All women, no men, no weights, good instruction and great friends! Cons: Music-not enough variety especially after 2 years!
In order for this routine to work for you, you have to push yourself to do the work. If you're going to go in just so you can say "Well, I did my 30 minute work out" without really putting effort into your workout, it's not going to work. You have to ...
Pros: All women, 30 minute workout Cons: Hours, repetitive, lack of challenge
I had heard some success stories from Curves, so I decided to try it out. Thirty minutes a day, three times a week would definitely fit into my unpredictable work schedule. Plus, I thought the motivational aspect would really keep me on top of it. I ...
Pros: I think Curves is a good place for woman who have never worked out before. Cons: Curves is really all about the money.
Curves is all about money.....I work for curves, but I am in the process of opening my own woman's fitness facility, NOT A CURVES. I have never liked the idea that we have SCRIPS to read when answering the phone or talking to women. There is a whole ...
Pros: fun workout, supportive environment, actual RESULTS! Cons: price, limited hours, might not offer much to those who are already very athletic
I just joined curves less than a month ago and I am extremely pleased with the results thus far. I am 29 years old and have been overweight by about 15-20 pounds for many years. I have always hated to exercise and had become flabby ...

Pros: All Women Club Convenient Easy to learn machines and routine Management was very supportive Cons: Can get boring Hours may be limited
I joined Curves at the recommendation of a friend who had seen great results; I checked it out as I had seen it in my neighborhood but wondered what it was all about. I was looking for toning, firming, increased energy but not weight loss ...
Pros: Great for people that are self-motivated to work their hardest at every machine. Cons: I can see how it would be easy to slack off and see no results.
I worked out at Curves for a year. Yes, I was out of shape and overweight (5'0, 145 lb) when I started. I had worked out at gyms in the past with great results, but always ended up being there for a couple hours to get in everything I ...
Pros: it does give initial body strength and toning Cons: If the room is full........you will need to wait your turn......if you have time.

Pros: * No guess work in what exercises to do and how long to do them Cons: * If you are an intense athlete then you're better off at Gold's.
Before Curves I had no energy at all, I didn't work out, my metabolism was horrible, and I just kept eating. Curves is making a huge difference in my life. The workouts are so quick that before you know it, you are done! I love how the equipment ...
A great place to exercise! by rachel6476 ,Jan 07 '04
Pros: Quick- only 30 minutes, many franchises all over. Cons: Hours of operation are inconsistent and only morning weekend hours.
Curves is a great place to work out if you don't have time for a complicated gym routine and want to get into shape.
Personally, I played sports all throughout my life and still play softball to this day at the ripe age of 27. I am not your typical couch potato but even Curves is great for me. It works every muscle and you don't have a personal trainer breathing down your throat telling you to do this many reps, etc etc.
Many people complain that the workout isn't enough. Well I have found that these people don't push themselves on the machines. If you push yourself to do more reps within the 30 second time frame, you'll get results. Just sitting there casually pushing on the machines won't get you anywhere.
I constantly push myself and as a result, I have beautifully sculpted bicep and tricep muscles. Curves WILL put on muscle mass so don't dispair if you gain at first. Muscle does weigh more than fat.
Just like any exercise program, you have to put in effort to get results. Curves DOES work, but you have to make it happen.
Pros: Improved blood pressure and I'm doing something to improve my health Cons: Location is too dusty. Needs a good scrubbing.
I'm 50, have a sit down job for 8 - 10 hours a day and I was up to 172 lbs on my 5'8" frame. I was growing out of my size 12's and was struggling with high blood pressure. After trying several blood pressure pills that made me feel lousy, my Dr suggested 2 things 1) stop eating: bread, pasta, potatoes and rice 6 days a week and eat whatever 1 of those you wish 1 day a week (I never have eaten sweets), and go to Curves. This was in February. Its been slow going but I've lost 20 pounds and feel much better. My blood pressure is down and my clothes now fit much better.
The only complaint I have is the dust. At the location I go to I really don't believe they keep it very clean. My intention is to talk to the owner because I'm highly allergic to dust and its creating a heath problem I didn't count on getting from a health club. We will see if my talk corrects the problem or she is offended and ignores my complaint.
Curves Community Fabulous Women by heminator ,Jul 22 '04
Pros: Inexpensive, caring staff, supportive members, no men, get healthy and fit safely. Cons: Curves doesn't have tanning beds to relax in after a workout ;-)
Want to learn more about what Curves members actually have to say about Curves for Women and their own experiences? Check out my favorite place to hang out online when I'm not at my Curves Club. The http://groups.msn.com/curvescommunity/
I've been a member of curves for over two years and I absolutely love it! The thing about Curves, beyond what other reviewers have written, is the realness of the women members themselves.
Most aren't there to try to attain the perfect body. Rather, they are there, bettering their health, getting fit and enjoying a community type atmosphere that supports their efforts and allows them to be just who they are without having to worry about their appearance as much as they would in a typical gym.
Disappointed Middle-Ager by dhastings4256 ,May 26 '04
Pros: Fun, supportive, I liked most of the music Cons: Not enough of a workout if you've already lost your water weight
At 48, and after having done Weight Watchers with very limited success, I finally agreed with my doctor to add in exercise. I joined Curves with such high hopes. The first visit they measure everything! A month later, they measure it all again. Most of my friends had lost between 7 to 10 inches in their first month. I had lost one pound, and 1/2 inch in my boobs - that was it! Disappointed? God, yes. I was convinced to stick with it, that building muscle is good for my bone density, etc. At the end of month 2, I still was only down one pound, but now the boobs were down 3/4 of an inch, and my ARMS were down 1/2 inch. I will give it one more month, but that's it. My doctor echoed what I've heard a number of women say: Curves is wonderful for those who've never worked out, for those dramatically over-weight (which I'm not), and for older women. I would recommend it only to anyone in these three categories.
Pros: Quick, structured, motivating, effective Cons: none that I can think of
Curves is no frills, but it works! I've always hated going to the gym - lugging heavy weights here and there.. turning red and sweaty while surrounded by body builders and perky young women.
I'm 42 years old and I recently joined Curves. The cost is $40 per month. The routine is simple and the music makes it fun. I like the fact that each exercise is only 30 seconds long. One hydraulic machine for 30 seconds and one springboard for cardio for another 30 seconds.
After just 8 visits I can feel my muscles starting to firm up. I haven't weighed myself yet but my energy level is increasing all the time.
I would recommend the Curves program to any woman who is fat and 40 but has a sincere desire to look better!
This is FINALLY the solution I've been looking for!
I am actually getting CURVES by Cooncatluvr ,Jun 24 '04
Pros: Greatest time/money spent to give yourself something positive. Cons: Gee, only open 6 days??
I'm getting my curves back that I thought I didn't have anymore. It's invigorating and I feel great. It's the best gift I can give myself. After always putting myself on the back burner, I decided to give myself a present for Mother's Day and so I bought myself a membership..
So Glad I did. In the first month I lost over 10 1/2 inches and 8 lbs. My clothes are telling me how great I'm doing.
The amount of time vs effort that you put into this program, you reap the greatest rewards..
Pros: Only 30 min. Cons: Too expensive, not physically challenging enough, year-long contract.
I have been a Curves for Women member for about 7 months. I have seen no results and I found that it is not challenging enough for me. I don't even break a sweat. I am pretty young--22 yrs old--and not overweight that much (I just wanted to lose 10-15 pounds), and I don't feel like this is the best option for me, especially since most of the other women at the gym are older. It's also very expensive compared to a regular gym--and they lock you in for a year. Definitely not worth it unless you go every single day. I don't go very much because, like I said, I don't walk out feeling like I had a good work out. The hours are very limited too.
Pros: friendly staff Cons: the hours of operation - very poor!!!!!!
not sure how safe the program is
I just moved and joined Curves because the number of gyms in my area is limited.
What I like:
Friendly staff and members
All women
Good Price
Fun, creative exercise incentives/games
What I don't like:
The hours!!!! It seems like most Curves members are retired. My Curves is open for three hours on Sat. (9-12), from 9-2 & 3-7 Mon.-Fri., and closed on Sun.
Work out gets boring
Was just diagnosed with tendonitis (ankles and knees) after only 5 visits. I'm pretty sure I got it from jogging in place on the aerobic platform. I'm not totally blaming Curves for this, but I strongly believe they need better aerobic options. I was also told to do as many repetitions on the machines as possible in order to get the best workout. I wonder if this also contributed to the tendonitis in my knees (the leg press and leg extension machines).
I've never had any physical injuries in my life. I'm just a little unsure about Curves at this point.
Pros: You can pay monthly, machines are manageable, and you really do lose inches. Cons: Limited weekend hours and measurements can be inaccurate if taken by different staff each month.
Although I have only been going to Curves for a few months, I find that it fits right into my lifestyle. I go immediately after work (or else I probably would never go)and spend 30 minutes on their circuit. I have NEVER joined an exercise program before and feel that I can actually do this program. If you have a physical limitation, there are alternative or variations to do. I feel better after my 30 minutes and believe it or not, actually look forward to going each day.
Pros: Quick workout that is easy to stick to Cons: Limited hours of operation
I decided to join Curves in July as I wanted a full body workout, but being a working mother, I have found that going to a regular gym just takes too much time. I joined with my mom, and this is the first time in her life that she has actually been on a regular exercise program.
After 3 months of working out at Curves, and not really dieting, I've lost 2 inches off my waist and hips and an inch off my arms. This surprised me, as I'm an experienced weight trainer and I didn't really think I was working my muscles very much! I'm very pleased with the fact that I'm down one pants size already.
This is a great workout for women who are limited on time and want to have a good all around workout in a non-threatening environment.
A good workout, when the place is open by fishwrapper ,Jan 07 '05
Pros: Easy to use machines, never a wait to work out Cons: Hours change capriciously, at least at my local Curves.
I joined a year ago and worked out regularly (3-5 times a week) for the first six months. I only lost a few pounds, but I did lose inches. (Muscle weighs more than fat). It's a good program for newbies, especially if you join with a friend. I got bored after a while and stopped going. I'm trying to get back on track, but the owner, apparently shortened the hours. When I joined, Curves was open until 7 and now they're apparently closing at 6, so yesterday I drove there (at 6) for nothing. Thought I'd give it another shot today so I went back only to find the owner had decided not to open because of inclement weather!! (It snowed enough here to close schools, but I don't know of any other businesses that felt it necessary to close.) I'm stuck paying for another month, when my contract is up. I won't be renewing.
Pros: Energetic, simple, friendly, results. Cons: Some of the clubs have restrictive hours, but its not a problem for me.
I love Curves. I joined in August, and I go 3 times a week. It has been well worth the money. I went from being an excersise-a-phobic, to looking forward to my 3 visits a week. In under 2 months, I have lost 9 pounds, 7 pounds of body fat, and 7 inches! I am a walking advertisement for Curves.
The staff at my home club is very helpful. All the trainers know my name and say hi to me when I walk in. The owners are registered nurses, so they know their stuff. I am a frequent travel pass user, which means you can go to any other Curves club for free. I go to mainly two other locations, and have had a great experience at both.
My home club has 12 machines, while another one I go to has just the simple 8. I shouldn't say simple, because you go around the circut 3 times instead of 2, and I can feel the difference! Especially after the squats and leg press.
I would recommend Curves to anyone. I feel better, look better, and I'm making a positive change for myself which will be with me forever.
Great workout, but lousy hours by karenand ,Oct 11 '05
Pros: Easy-to-use equipment, friendly environment, good results in terms of stamina and muscle tone. Cons: Unsatisfactory weekend and evening hours.
I love the Curves workout, and have been pleased with the results in terms of increased stamina and muscle tone, but it just doesn't fit my schedule! I have called 10 Curves franchises in my urban area, and they are ALL closed evenings, Saturday afternoons, and Sundays -- the times when I have free time and find it most convenient to exercise.
I ended up joining one of the 24-hour fitness centers--now if only I could get them to buy the easy-to-use Curves equipment!
Pros: Total body workout that hits every major muscle group and ranges in intensity. Cons: Club decor and owners' knowledge varies.
I must admit, I was a bit skeptical when I first walked into my local Curves because the machines did not look challenging but I was soon to be proved wrong. During my first workout I couldn't believe how hard I was working! I am an avid athelete, and belonged to "traditional" gyms in the past and implemented a steady routine of light free weights and cardio but Curves offers the benefits of both those types of exercise in a single routine. I also wondered if this routine would continue to challenge me as the weeks progressed and it has! As long as I continue to push my self by going faster on each machine, the greater the resistance is. I have been a member of Curves for 6 months now and I really do love it. Fast, effective, fun, and the owners are always supportive and helpful at my club. Check it out- you won't be disappointed!
Best invention since sliced bread! by dechjo ,May 04 '06
Pros: Quick, easy, variety of machines. Cons: Not going to continue losing weight unless diet changed also!
I was so happy to discover Curves! I was 26 years old when I first joined, and although I was not overweight I had never stayed with an exercise program for very long before. The structured Curves workout is just what I needed. No more spending 30 minutes on an elliptical or treadmill! No more having to sign up for the cardio machine I wanted at the gym, or waiting for someone to get off the weight machine I was going to use next...and of course no more having to adjust the weights, either!
I just walk in and start working out and 30 minutes later, I 'm done! I don't think I'll have any problem sticking with this workout as a life-long exercise routine.
Pros: Great for people just starting out on an exercise program Cons: Terrible for anyone interested in taking there fitness level to the next level.
Honestly Curves is a great place for people that are just starting out on physical exercise or just want to get a little activity in for the week. I found the program to be too easy and lost some weight, but I got bored very quickly. The reviewer that mentioned the knowledge of the staff may be questionable is right on the money. The woman who owns the Curves where I live was intrusive on my life (calling incessantly) and recommended that I slow down the pace of my workout (I would go around the circle 4-5 times as opposed to the usual 3). I quit, but still paid monthly payments due to my year contract. Now I belong to a REAL gym with treadmills and weights and I have lost 20 pounds.
Pros: Easy going. Comfortable for women of all ages and sizes. Not boring. Cons: You don't see rapid results if you really want to lose weight.
This might not be for everyone and especially not someone that wants a hardcore sweaty workout and actually wants to lose weight. That's why you see alot of older people there because it's not hard. Not hard enough for me. I'm in my mid thirties and tried it for a few months. It's different in a way that it is all women and you can talk and socialize. Some of the women go there just for that!!! But you will not get results because it doesn't push you and when lifting weights you want to excelerate - not stay at the same resistance all the time. I wasn't losing any weight and I was watching what I ate. I was disappointed and canceled it. The hours are kind of limiting and the cost each month is way too high!!!
Not challenging enough, workout is the same every time. by dp40 ,Jan 29 '06
Pros: Easy to do, music is great. It's the fastest workout that I have ever done. Cons: Workout gets boring after awhile. you can't change the flow of the workout.
The workout is not challenging enough. You can't do anything different. I leave feeling as though I have not had a workout. Your body gets used to the same workout after a while and you won't see any results. After 1 month of working out there, I got bored and I haven't returned there yet. It is so hard to go back.
Are you at risk for an injury???? YES!!! by magwheels ,Oct 23 '06
Pros: Not locked into a "contract." I chose the monthly payment plan. Cons: Injuries...
I've been a member of curves since Nov. '05 up until Aug. '06 when I realized I was injured. I couldn't use my right leg at all, extreme pain. I went to a sports medicine doctor and had an x-ray which came up negative. I thought that I had a severe pull, but came to find out through an MRI and dye injection that I actually fractured the top of my femur bone which connects to the hip. It's commonly called a "stress fracture." This is an injury which happened over a course of a few months. They (Curves) should really re-think their equipment and/or 30-minute workout system. I know that this injury was due to Curves. This is the only gym and/or exercise that I've been doing. I'm very reluctant to going back as a member.
Pros: Helpful, no high pressure or hovering Cons: doubtful about staff qualifications re fitness training
I'm age 71, quite fit. I had a 3-time freebie and hated it (disco music from the '80's or '70's, usually loud), and annoying to hear the constant "change stations now".
But I have insurance that has a fitness club benefit - !!
at specific places. My regular gym closed so Curves was
my only choice and I signed up.
I'm surprised that I've been able to lose a couple #'s and think it will continue. The routineness of it makes it
easier to stick with, in a perverse way - you don't have to think about it, just do it, it's short. After reading the many comments about lack of experienced staff, I'm more careful. I notice that some of the staff are students working part time, and few or none seem to have more than superficial knowledge. I've had no pain, though I have family history of arthritis. I'm being more careful about stretching, and I use free weights some at home.
I've only been at this about a month, and I feel good after the exercise - but I'm definitely going to heed the
excellent critiques I've read here.
CURVES FOR WOMEN is FANTASTIC!!!!! by freddieh28 ,Nov 26 '07
Pros: Simple workout. Cons: NONE
I was a Curves member for a year in 2003. I never felt or looked better in my life! My husband told me to stop losing weight as he thought I was getting too thin (and I wasn't even dieting!!!!). Due to family obligations I stopped going. Now a few years later my family obligations have settled down and it's time to get back in shape. I just rejoined CURVES and can't wait to see the results. It's a simple no frills work out anyone can do. It's not like going to one of the gyms where all the other women care about is how they look in their workout clothes. It's real and I can tell you, so are the results. Well worth joining, but you must go three times a week without fail and really give it your all while you are there! Try it it's FANTASTIC and your results will be too!
encouraging for all ages women by dragonj ,Apr 13 '07
Pros: anyone can do it. no other equipment or clothing needed for the 30 minute work-out Cons: hours 6am to 8pm and half days on Saturday. not open on Sundays.
I joined Curves in August 2006 at 172 pounds,5'4", wearing a tight Size XL or 14.
I am 54 years old and ran 10K in my 30s and have backpacked in Colorado and the Sierras usually 3 - 5 day trips.
I just wanted to get back in shape and in 7 months have lost 24 pounds and 25 inches. I wear a loose M size 10 clothing.
It is perfect for women like me. We just want to get in shape, lose some pounds and inches to get healthier. It's fun to talk to the other women there.
There's a few food supplements and clothing line for sale.
It's not for try-outs for body-builders or 'real athletes'. There's no spa or jacquzzi or juice-bar or mirrors. No one is trying to impress anyone.
Pros: Good structure. Nice women. Cons: I injured my knee.
I enjoyed Curves quite a bit until I injured my knee there. After physical therapy and several months away I decided to cancel and find something less demanding on my knees.
It's worked for me -- over 40 pounds lost! by pfonseca ,Jan 22 '06
Pros: Fun, supportive environment. Cons: Limited hours at some locations.
I started at Curves for Women over 3 years ago. I started off well at first, and lost about 10 pounds, but then stopped going and gained it all back plus more. I went to 186 pounds. I got the courage to go back and it took a while, but I am now under 140 pounds. I participated in the Curves 6 Week Challenge to adjust my diet and lifestyle also. In addition to going to Curves, I also started drinking lots of water and watching what I eat, somewhat. The machines are easy to learn and the music is upbeat. I had tried other places, but always had to adjust the machines and sometimes forgot even how to operate them. I was intimidated and uncomfortable being so overweight and around a bunch of athletic young people at other places, but at our Curves, everyone is nice and supportive. At our Curves, there are incentives for exercising and losing weight, trivia contests, and games to keep it fun.
Horrible - Edmonds Washington by denisebr ,Mar 21 '04
Pros: No Pros Cons: Cons - won't stop deducting monthly fees when membership is canceled in writting.
Be very careful when canceling your membership. Each Curves employee will advise differently. When membership is cancelled, They will still deduct monthly membership fees and finding someone in a main office to help is impossible.
Maybe the other Curves are better than the Edmonds Washington Branch. Just be alert.
Good for people with physical limitations. by deeparks ,Jan 22 '07
Pros: Good for people with physical limitations. Cons: Compared to the knowledge level of professional trainers , Curves staff not very professional.
I have arthritis in my knees, ankles and neck, and I just turned 50! I'm in pain most of the time, and the thought of working out at a traditional gym was not an option I was willing to try again. Why? Because of the intimidation and pushiness of the trainers for me to do more than I'm able or comfortable doing. I don't need to risk further injury to my already damaged knee joints.
My right knee is so bad that I'm in need of a knee replacement which I and my doctor agree that I'm too young for right now.Her recommendation was physical therapy or light exercise. At any time as I'm simply walking I will experience a dislocation of my knee.
So, I wear a brace for walking and standing long periods. The Curves workout is perfect for me. It's allowing me to slowly strengthen my entire body, especially the muscles in my knees. My posture has improved, and I feeling better than ever.
Pros: I don't know since I never was able to exercise there. Cons: Very bad business ethics. Don't trust them.
I signed up with Curves, paid a big sign up fee, plus one month's exercise fee and gave them access to my bank account. Shortly thereafter, I became chronically ill, disabled, and handicapped (I now walk with a cane). I have fibromyalgia and severe arthritis. I cannot do anything but special medical exercises now. I never, ever exercised at a Curves for Women! I called them and told them what happened to me and that I'd never be exercising again. I kept in touch with them faithfully for about a month to see if I could get better. Then I never heard anything from them, not a bill, nothing. And yet one year later, they turned me over to a nasty collection agency. I went into their place, using my cane and in obvious pain and asked them why. They said it was their business practice to declare the whole contract due despite my disability and handicap. BEWARE OF CURVES.
Injury due to poor technique/faulty training by msj51 ,Jul 01 '06
Pros: great place to be invisible and start up a regimen Cons: staff not careful enough w/ possibility of injuries to generally out-of-shape,older,unstretched, non-athletic women (me)
I started enthusiastically and went two times before I threw my lower back out (with waist side twist machine), and the pounding on the boards tore my meniscus (knee cartilage). This is permanent damage that can never repair b/c there is no blood supply to heal meniscus.
Please proceed carefully before signing up by myar ,Apr 30 '06
Pros: Can build strength if you are really out of shape Cons: Not good for anything beyond MINIMAL improvement
I joined Curves in Jefferson, GA almost two years ago. I started going 3 times a week and was losing weight AND inches. But, then I got stronger. Good, right? Not exactly. I started going around more than the 3 times you're told to because I was stronger and it felt good. Almost no one there, certainly no one waiting on the machines so there should be no problem. The lady running it came up to me and told me in no uncertain terms to go home, I had exceeded my rounds. It really hurt my feelings and I never went back. I still had to pay the monthly fee for an entire year and then found out they had automatically signed me up for another year even though I had not gone there in 10 months(it's in the very, very small print in the contract.) I called and they would not accept a phone call request to cancel it. I had to appear in person or write a letter... ugh!!
curves not for working women by research22 ,Feb 06 '05
Pros: Fast workout, many locations Cons: Hours not geared to working women
Curves is not for the working woman. The franchise hours are set up to cater to stay-at-home or retired women. Eighty percent of their open hours are during the time period that many woman are at work. On weekends they are only open on Saturday morning and they close at 7pm on weeknights (you have to be there at 6:30). Ironically, since Curves is a women-only gym, you may find yourself being an involuntary contributor to political causes which seek to limit rights for women. So check that out if it matters to you.
Pros: In and out in 30 minutes Cons: 1-year contract. Not much on cardio, at least for me.
I'm a 44-year old runner who runs an average 20~25 miles per week, and I needed a way to cross-train every other day on my non-running days to build muscle and strengthen my upper body and core. I've been going to Curves for 8 months now and I have gone from 25% body fat when I started to 19.4% body fat last week. I've lost 6 pounds total weight but lost almost 8 pounds of body fat. Toned muscles keep burning fat even when idle. The program works beautifully. My Curves is located only a mile away from home, so it's very convenient to go there after work or on the way to the store, etc.
Pros: Great for the extremely overweight, infirm and out of shape Cons: Not challenging enough and just too BORING
My daughter gave me a gift membership for 2 months to Curves and I couldn't wait for it to end. By my third time there I was totally bored with the "workout" and the "change stations now" recording every 30 seconds was driving me nuts. I was actually injured at this place, smashing my knee into one of the machines as I raced for the next one. I never broke a sweat at Curves, some of the women there look like they came straight from work without having to change clothes, which doesn't say much about the quality of the workout. I think Curves is OK for the extremely overweight and out of shape woman who is just starting to exercise, but even though I'm in my mid 50's I guess I was in better shape than I thought
Curves has changed my life! by lilbird517 ,Jan 22 '05
Pros: Friendly, competent staff. Inexpensive. FUN! Cons: Wish it were open 24 hours
In 8 months at Curves, I have lost 50 inches and 60 pounds!!!! I love the circuit training, the music, the friendly staff, and the 30 minute work-out. Curves has changed my life for the better. I went from a size 22 to a 12/14, I sleep better, look great and feel amazing. Curves is a fun way to exercise and easy to commit to.
Curves is great
The workout is wonderful I have lost 82 lbs in a year doing Curves.
Some people think the workout is to easy but that is because they are not working hard enough. The faster you go on the machines the harder the workout. At my location the girls always tell me that if I feel I can keep going or something is to easy then I need to work harder, and when I do the machines get harder to more and the workout becomes more intense. I love Curves.
Pros: The caring and support attitude of the staff Cons: Probably not as effective as weight lifting
I joined Curves approximately one year ago. Up until then I had been sedentary for 15 years. Curves is not going to give me a rock hard body but it does wonders for my self-esteem and sense of well-being.
Whenever I walk in the door, the staff not only remember my name but they remember details of my life that I choose to share with them while going around the circuit. When I slack off and don't go for awhile, they are always happy to see me come back.
Pros: Works for anyone committed to the program, plenty of support on and offline. Cons: In my mind there aren't any cons.
Realizing Curves isn't for everyone, I have to say it seems to be helping a huge demographic of women who really didn't have many gym/workout choices before Curves came along.
Speaking from my own perspective, as a 40-ish woman who cringed at the thought of going to a typical co-ed gym - with all the young, affluent hard-bodied men and women who likely never struggled with weight issues in their life-time, Curves is exactly the place for someone like me!
If you want to learn more from others who have joined Curves and are experiencing terrific success, visit http://www.curvesforwomenfitness.com and click on the Curves Community Forum link to find the message boards and more.
Pros: May be suitable for inactive elderly, but high risk of injury without proper guidance. Cons: Deceptive contracts, horrible hours, inexperienced, rude staff, risk of injury, long lines.
I joined Curves over a year ago, signed a year contract with automatic withdrawal from my checking account. I decided after a month that it wasn't for me. Horrible hours, too social, long lines, inexperienced "trainers" and bad music.
My banking software had been set to accept the electronic withdrawal, and I have just now realized that, 8 months AFTER the end of my contract, they are still deducting their payment from my account. Apparently, they have this sneaky little clause in small print included in the contract which basically says they can continue to withdraw funds until you request IN WRITING that your membership be canceled. This was never pointed out to me, and I received a poor xerox copy of the contract.
Pros: Weight loss, inches lost, more energy, lowered Cholesterol and Blood Pressure Cons: NONE
Curves For Women is the best thing that ever happened to me. I joined almost 4 yrs. ago. I joined Weight Watchers at the same time. My goal to loose 75 lbs and go from a size 20 to a 12. I achieved my goal about a year ago. I go to Curves at least three times a week and Weight Watchers once a week. I have maintained my weight and continue to loose inches.
I have corrected a Cholesterol and Blood Pressure problem ....NO MEDS...
I find that when I do not go to Curves I feel it...ALOT!!
I Love Curves for Women and HIGHLY recommend the program.
Curves for women in Pomeroy OHIO by elonalee ,Mar 06 '07
Pros: Lost in inches and my arms are bigger muscles Cons: Didn't lose any weight but some might lose weight
Hi All i am a member of curves for women in pomeroy ohio and I like it. Infact, it is the only thing that gets me out of the house cuz i have to sit and care for my sick finacee. It gets my heart rate up at least 3 times a week and the people are all very nice. They are really working at getting new equipment and members. They have games and all sort of different music. They did arrange the equipment in different spots to make it a bit different which was nice. I too have been losing inches but not weight but then again i don't watch what i eat. So hey if its working in some way or another and i am having fun, I say everyone should at least try it for a week. :)
Pros: They don't seem to last long. Cons: EVIL LYING STEALING
I joined Curves last year, hoping to tone my body and lose a couple of pounds. They were horrible right from the start. They lied to us regarding payment and contract length, the facility was horrible, the exercises boring, the staff could have cared less what was going on, they sat on their FAT (yes, they were NOT utilizing the equiptment themselves, obviously) butts and played solitaire and surfed the web, the music was dull and I didn't even break a sweat. They wouldn't cancel my membership, despite a medical condition and I found out today, that DESPITE my request to terminate my membership the INSTANT my contract expired, they charged me for another month! And when I called to discuss it, THEY HUNG UP ON ME BEFORE I COULD EVEN INTRODUCE MYSELF. I HATE THIS COMPANY!!!
Great Workout If You Stay Focused by joann7 ,Oct 27 '04
Pros: quick workout, cardio/resistance training combo works great
staff are very supportive, pleasant atmosphere Cons: does not work your abs
I think curves is a great place if you are serious, dedicated and have reasonable expectations. NO it's not your typical gym but that is obvious as soon as you walk through the door. I joined hoping to lose inches and maybe 5 - 8 pounds. I have been a member for a month and lose 4 pounds and lost two inches from my hips. I never got any results like that at a regular gym so the curves concept has worked for me. I must mention when I am in the circuit I am totally focused and concentrating on the muscles I am working out. I am there to workout and I don't socialize during my workout. The only negative thing for me is the abs. I need to do abs on my own because none of the machines really work your abs which is no big deal. Abs are the easiest to workout at home. I enjoy the workout. Not too easy if you don't make it easy! Work hard, stay focused and have a positive attitude and you will see results no matter what size you are!!!
Pros: fast fun social works for heavier people needing to find a beginner type facility Cons: not for the fit woman looking for a quick gym, monotonous, no room for improvement.
Curves is wonderful for the (sorry) middle-older aged woman or even younger who lead a sedentary life and need to shed layers of fat. It is a great way for one to get into better cardiovascular shape and tone and meet people at the same time. I agree with other posts that the knowledge of the staff is lacking. I joined a Curves because it was conveinient and I believed I could get a workout in by using their machines and doing the cardio. I did not find it beneficial to me at all. I do think if I had more to lose or tone I would have had some success. Another thing, it can be so boring that they change the rotation to counterclock-wise once a week for fun. It is cold. Too many fans blowing too.
It was a fun environment. We had a theme day once a week where you had to dress a certain way...really social..
Pros: See full review for lots of great Pros! Cons: See full review for a Con that's not so bad!
Everyone is different, but for me, a young curvy blonde, I'm so glad there's a place I can go to stay fit, and not have to worry about male instructors getting their hands on me. Some of the girls wonder why I'm there, but being thin doesn't mean you're heart healthy, so I do it for the cardio - but mostly for a mental release.
Some fitness-obsessed folks aren't impressed with curves, but for us normal ladies, it's just right for our tight schedules and thinning wallets. I'm not really interested in learning all the fancy lingo that accompanies a big gym, I just want to sweat a little and feel my heart pound - curves does that for me. Curves comes highly recommended by this fan - try it, you'll like it.
PROS:
Simple to follow, affordable, no need to learn steps or new skills(as you do with aerobics), you pace yourself - no one pushes you beyond your comfort level. No Men! Good way to socialize.
CONS:
Can get repetative sometimes, but it forces you to get creative, so it's not really a "con" after all!.
if you TRY it you'll like it. by ellegirl ,Jul 18 '07
Pros: Hour and a half workout in 30 minutes.
Low price compare to big gyms.
Results. Cons: none that I have encountered.
Most of the reviews here are from people who have not actually tried it and have not given it the opportunity to work for them. I lost 9 inches in my first month! How much it works for the individual is up to the individual. With it being all hydraulics..the harder YOU work, the more your results. It is the best thing out there for women who want results not just frills.
Pros: QUICK, EASY, FRIENDLY AND INEXPENSIVE. Cons: BORING, CHRISTIAN MUSIC, UNKNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF, REPUBLICAN DONORS.
I ENJOY CURVES BECAUSE IT IS QUICK AND NONCOMPETITIVE. AT ANOTHER ALL LADIES CLUB PEOPLE HOGGED MACHINES AND THERE WERE EVEN CONFRONTATIONS. NOT COOL. I HATE THE FAKEY CHRISTIAN ROCK AND THE STAFF ARE EVEN LESS KNOWLEDGEABLE THAN I AM, AND GIVE CONFLICTING INSTRUCTIONS. AND I NOW DISCOVERED THAT CURVES GIVES HEAVILY TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, SO I WILL HAVE TO STOP GOING THERE, AS A TRUE PROGRESSIVE PATRIOT.
Curves: A real disappointment! by bamullin ,Apr 11 '06
Pros: 30 minutes only Cons: You can achieve the same results at home!
I have been going to a Curves in Downtown Montreal for the past year and found it extremely disappointing. From the repetitive music to the less than challenging machines one would be better off with a workout video tape. Also despite all the hype about the machines there is nothing but good old sit-ups (that you could do at home) that Curves offers for strengthening stomachs. Added to this the people running Curves in downtown Montreal are more interested in extracting money than in your well being. I hurt my back and was unable to continue at Curves but was made to continue paying them because they have no policy of refunding money! A total rip-off! You are better off trust me working out at home, or running in your neighborhood or anything else!
Pros: If you really think about it, you can do almost anything for 30 seconds. Cons: The blasting of Christian music, "14 beats/minute" is an assault on the brain cells.
The initial view of the Curves for Women program looked good .. 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise in a women-only setting. The 'atmosphere appeared to be supportive of women of all shapes, sizes and moderate fitness levels. However, after a brief "honeymoon" period the Christian practices of this particular club stated to emerge and it became evident that this Christian dogma exercise program was not for me!
minimal results, lied to by manager by snowbirdfsf ,Sep 07 '08
Pros: fast work out Cons: minimal cardio, no locker room, no classes
I went for several months and saw no results going three times a week. My sister wanted me to tag along with her to Gold's Gym so I did and found out that it was the same price as Curves but offered a lot more. I signed up there and called to cancel at Curves. I was told that cancellation was not an option. I then contacted another neighborhood Curves and found out that I had been lied to. I am still trying to get my membership cancelled after over a month. On the results side of things I have lost 15 pounds in my first month at Gold's Gym.
Curves is not worth the money by olliemae ,Apr 02 '08
Pros: Some excerise is better than none. Good place to meet people Cons: Trainers at the my Curves location were not professional.
Apromise of a professional Trainer was not kept. In the five months I attended, I received no help with the machines after the first visit. The personell on duty were always busy playing games on the computer or talking on the phone. The promise of a monthly weigh in was not kept. The apperance of the ladies that I saw week after week did not appear to change. I was ready to quit and join another gym when I hurt my shoulder on one of the machines and was able to cancel my contract. As soon as my injury heals, I will go to another gym.
palm desert credit card fraud by drlaura5 ,Jun 13 '08
Pros: nice facility Cons: credit card fraud
I went to Palm Desert Curves on a "trial" membership and decided not to continue after the free trial month. They continued to charge my credit card for 16 months even though our bookkeeper called every month and the bank reversed the charges.
I just finished talking to Todie the manager and she says they have no record of my name or any charges. Chase Visa has is now invesitigating fraud.
Pros: easy Cons: doesn't change
difficult communication when there is a problem
high pressure sales tactics
I was very excited to join Curves, and to get my workout completed in just 30 minutes. It wasn't what it cracked up to be. They are high pressure to buy their products, aren't always friendly, and most of all the workout got old. They never changed the order of the machines, so soon not only was the work out boring, I wasn't getting anything out of it, as evidenced by my measures (all went UP!)
Pros: It's Fun, Fast safe and efficient and it gives me the fat burn I need! Cons: It's hard to think of a con, it's a great regiment for all women.
I joined Curves in Cumming, GA in 2004 Feb. I am still participating in the circuit routine today just down the road at the Roswell, Ga Curves. My workouts have exceeded 400 and With it's fun, fast & safe motto, I can't tell you how the 3 workouts a week regiment has changed my body and my mind. I have gone from 239 lbs down to 180 with a vision of 150 as my goal. It's amazing how fun the experience is and how fit I feel. The regiment has helped me make better choices in all areas of my life and it has given me the stamina I need to live day to day. Participating in the 6 week solution that is held 3 times a year has taught me how to make better choices nutritionally and given me the confidence that I will never gain that old weight back. I'll never be a skinny woman but at my age as long as I am fit and feel great I am happy to share my success with others who need to stop thinking and get started.
Pros: 30 mins, you can travel to all 10,000 locations, no brainer total body workout Cons: no daycare
I joined Curves in 2002. I had just turned 50 and everything was heading south and getting flabby. I had never been a heavy person, 7/8 to 9/10 but now I was 11/12 and very uncomfortable at that size. Shopping for clothes wasn't fun anymore, forget bathing suits! My self esteem was diminishing. I wasn't eating more but I was gaining weight...why? Out of disgust I joined Curves while I was still a member at LA Fitness where I didnt' go of course. I loved the non-intimidating atmosphere and the positive people there. The workout was a no brainer, simple but not easy and even fun! I followed their 3x per week recommendation and changed the way I ate (didn't diet though) as they instructed me and after about 3 months, everything changed. My body shape changed drastically and i was hooked. 5 years later, at 55, I am a size 4 (never been that before) and i feel awesome!
Pros: machines are made just for women, fast workout Cons: not enough cardio
I love curves!! Being an Exercise Science major, I know how to work out. I have been a member twice, I joined before my wedding and recently joined again in a different location.I'm 5'4 and weigh 122. I joined to tone up. Curves is as hard as you make it, every time I go in I make sure I break a sweat! There is not enough cardio, so you do have to add in cardio somewhere else, but for toning curves is great!
Pros: 30 minutes Cons: gets boring fast, not worth the money, not there for social hour!
I needed to get active and my husband liked the idea of a gym for only women lol. But seriously it gets very boring and repetitive. I am ok if the workers want to talk but after you get into a work out I dont want to make small talk. I am here to work out and once you get to a good level you cant progress. My review is to say I regret signing up not worth the money you pay for the equipment. You would be better off buying something to use at home.
Does anyone use the nutrition classes they offer? by dunnie ,Aug 11 '06
Pros: The instructor I spoke with was very fit and seemed knowledgeable. Cons: they don't offer a shower!! Bad for working out before going to work.
I just stopped in to a Curves in my local area and visited with the lady there and she told me about nutrition classes and a book that they offer. Has a protein and carb option. I like the idea of combining the workout with the nutrition counsel. The teacher is a former nurse who has lost 100 lbs and kept it off for many years.
Their web site shows all these major success stories but I haven't seen anything close to that being talked about here. Am I missing some?
The Curves 30-minute workout DOES work! by trinitysdreamz ,Aug 14 '08
Pros: women only, 30-minute workout with results, friendly and motivational staff, convenient hours, convenient location Cons: None - I LOVE Curves!!!
I joined Curves 18 months ago. I tried it with a free 2-week pass and saw results within the 2 weeks so I decided to join. My reason for joining was to become physically active. However, within just 2 weeks, I lost pounds and inches. When I started Curves, I was an average weight for my height and age but I knew I could improve upon my body. Well, 18 months later, I am still going to Curves 3 times a week and seeing results. My body fat is at the lower end of the average range, my body has become firmer and toned, and the cellulite has almost vanished. I love my Curves body!
You get out of the workout what you put into it. You must remain committed and go 3 times a week for 30 minutes every week. You must also push yourself to your fullest capacity as you use the equipment. After 18 months, Curves still works for me. My body changed from a size 10 to a size 6 and I feel healthy and much more energetic.
Pros: Good for toning Cons: 30 day cancellation policy
I belonged to Curves for two years. I expected to lose weight but found that their machines are good for toning only. You must still be careful with your diet as the exercises alone won't do it. I had a family issue come up so I asked if there was any kind of leave. I was told that I could take a two month medical leave but check with them at least once a month to let them know my status. After a month I decided that it would be better for me to quit. The friend that I joined with decided to quit also and she was told that there is a 30 day cancellation policy. Since I (supposedly) had the the two month leave I assumed that I would not be billed but that wasn't the case. I took a letter of resignation in and four days later I was billed again. When I called I was told that there is a 30 day cancellation policy so it didn't matter that I was already on a leave they were going to get their money no matter what.
Curves Smart Technology is the best way to go. 30 minutes by orange1165 ,Feb 06 '09
Pros: New CurvesSmart knowing how many calories your burning, free weight managment program Cons: no pool or whirlpool, no child care,
Working out on the new CurvesSmart technolgy has made my workout challenging. Knowing how many calories I burn, knowing if I made my targets is the way to go!! The owner is awesome and the staff are actual trainers.
Pros: Workout works for me Cons: No showers, can't go on my lunch
I can't believe some of the negative comments!! The work out is as hard or challenging as you make it. If 30 minutes isn't enough, do 45-60 minutes, like I do. Also, you are not restricted to 3x a week. I go 5 times every week, for at least 45 minutes.
In 7 wks, I have lost 8 1/2 " around my body, and put on 1/2" of muscle to my arms, where there was none before.
Hours at our local Curves are very convenient 6:30 am to 7 pm. The workers are not professional trainers, but all know the proper way to use the machines, and actively watch. If someone is doing something wrong, they correct you on the proper way to use the machine. I am not super chatty and social, but am not bothered by the other women if they chat. There are a variety of ages and sizes to the women who attend. All in all, one of the best things I have done for my overall health.
"one-year contract" may be misleading by rosebud80 ,Feb 16 '06
Pros: easy and quick, convenient location Cons: sneaky "rollover" contract, annoying religious music, poorly trained employees, minimal effectiveness of workout
I have read the reviews that mention the "one-year contract" and think it is important to clarify that if you choose the automatic payment method, which saves something like $10 a month, the automatic withdrawals will NOT stop at the end of the year of membership. I just got off the phone with my local Curves, and was told that the automated withdrawals will continue until I bring them a signed letter stating that I am ending my membership.
I went 2-3 times a week for 8 or 9 months, but grew really tired of the constant Christian music, and the sophomoric dress-up days ("wear green," "wear a hat," whatever). I expected the monthly withdrawals from my account to expire on the anniversary date of my joining, because that is how it was explained to me by the employee when I joined. Shame on me for not reading more thoroughly, but at least you will know going in what the deal is.
Clifton NJ Curves is a horrible place by mitonjmom ,Jun 23 '09
Pros: Not even a single thing good about this place. Cons: Instructor very disinterested and impolite too Old equipments.
I joined the curves facility at Van Houten,Clifton in NJ The instructor of this gym is completely at disinterest at what she is doing. She is the worst instructor I have ever come across and throws off a lot of attitude. The place is stinky, old equpiments and location not that great. I will never recommend this gym to anyone.
Good for Beginners…But at Some Point You Need to Move On by mrstoomey ,Oct 21 '09
Pros: Really good for women who are just starting out Supportive environment Cons: No room for improvement Same thing every day can get boring
I've been at both ends of the fitness spectrum…from 80 pounds overweight (five years ago) to super fit and trim (today). I found that Curves was a great start for me, but I had to move on to another workout regimen after a while. Curves got me moving, introduced me to weight training, helped me with some healthy eating tips and had a really supportive environment to encourage me. After a while, though, the same old thing day after day got boring, I couldn't improve substantially on the weight training or the cardio, and I realized that certain important aspects of fitness, especially flexibility, were not emphasized. Curves is great for getting women on the road to fitness, but at some point you need to move on.
Pros: Nothing - it's depressing - staff could care less Cons: everything...
Curves is out for your money any way they can even after you terminate membership. Watch your statements carefully and if you stop going make sure your request to stop payments is honored.
Curves for woman..workout INJURY!! by shesellshomes ,Jul 26 '09
Pros: All woman gender specific. In and out in 30 to 40 minutes. Cons: Please read above...INJURY! Be very careful if you are considering joining.
Please use caution when joining curves. If you are in top physical shape you may be ok. I have suffered 2 injuries and now can't continue going although I am being charged every month for my contract terms of one full year. I am reading about a lot of doctors reporting increase injuries from curves machines. I hurt my knee first...stayed away for a month, went back and injured my shoulder. They are using old equipment and the women who work there are not properly trained for specific issues...it's all 'cookie cutter'! Just use caution. In hindsight I would have saved my money, went outside walking everyday and did free weights at home along with some yoga stretching...hmmm, could have taken a well needed vacation for the money i've wasted at Curves. I am 53 and always considered in moderate physical shape. I can only imagine someone who has never worked out before and not getting the proper help they need.
