zCover micro3 Silicone Case - Protecting My iPod Nano From the Dangers Out There

Cons: I don't have confidence in the durability
The Bottom Line: This might not last as long as other iPod covers out there, but I'm pleased by the accessibility to what I need. The clips and armband are a plus.

With my new iPod, I wanted to protect it as much as possible. My last one bit the dust due to water being dripped on it, and the nice color screen on the 3rd Generation Apple iPod Nano was something I wanted to protect from scratches.
I purchased the zCover micro3 Silicone Case designed specifically for the iPod Nano. It looked nice and came in a variety of colors. I chose the gray silicone cover. Also included in the package was a belt clip and an armband.
The silicone cover fits snugly over the iPod Nano with holes on the sides for the inputs. On the bottom where the iPod connects to a dock or to the computer there is a silicone piece that covers the plug for this. This helps keep it free from dust or dirt when that plug isn’t needed.
There are openings for the headphone jack and the button that locks out the click-wheel. On the front of the cover, the click wheel is unprotected and easy to access. There is a clear plastic covering that goes over the screen. I put my 3rd Generation Apple iPod Nano in the cover by stretching it over the player as I inserted the player through the opening for the screen. Once the silicone case was in place, I then inserted the hard plastic cover over the screen. This was notched on the side to fit nicely over the screen. It’s held in place by the silicone cover.
I’m not usually someone who likes covers on things. I don’t have a cover or case on my cell phone as I feel they are too cumbersome. The zCover micro3 Silicone Case seems much different. It doesn’t hinder my use of the 3rd Generation Apple iPod Nano at all. Getting to the switch to lock out the wheel is easy with my nails and I have very short nails from typing. The bottom lifts up nicely when I need to plug it into the computer, the dock, or the player in my car.
The weakness is that I can see this cover will rip easily. Especially where I lift it up for the plug on the bottom of the iPod, I can see that will eventually tear with repeated use. Depending on how rough you are is probably how long it will last, but I think it will tear for everyone eventually. The plastic screen protects the iPod’s screen from bumps and also from fingerprints and smudges. It goes a long way to keeping the picture crisp and clear.
On the back of the silicone case is a hard plastic piece that is just a bit smaller than the entire iPod. This has a round piece in the middle with notched on it. This piece can lock into the clip or the hard plastic piece on the armband. Once on either, it stays on until it is released by pressing a plastic button.
My gut on this states that it could break easy as well. I know it could easily be crushed under the feet or if it got wedged somewhere and is pulled out. The plastic is extremely hard with no give to it. The clip does hold to a belt or a pocket very well and I had no problems with it slipping off.
The armband is made of Velcro material. The majority is of the band if of the loops portion of the Velcro and is much softer than rough Velcro many of us think of. The two pieces of Velcro hooks that hold the band in place seem quite secure and I haven’t had a problem with the armband coming loose. The two pieces sit pretty flush with each other, but it could come apart easily if something caught it and pulled. I don’t think it would happen too easily, but for those of us who have freak accidents happen to them, it’s a concern.
I like the zCover micro3 Silicone Case. it’s not cumbersome and covers my iPod nicely, protecting it from scratches and keeping it clean. I don’t think it will last forever, but it will do the job well enough. I felt I traded longevity for the functionality I need when using my iPod.
