I just got back from a 5-day trip to the Orlando area and visited many of the attractions down there, but this is one of the few that sticks out in my mind.
At first, I thought this attraction would be another cookie-cutter 3d presentation that would leave me bored for 20 minutes. I'm am pleased to say that my preconception was dead wrong.
Upon entering the building, you are taken into a large theater-like room with no seats and stand facing a cinema screen to watch a seemingly endless presentation of "True Colors" which is basically a 15-minute Kodak commercial. After that, you watch a short introductory video which sets the theme (an inventor awards show) of the presentation.
After all of this, you file out of the room via doors to your left into a much larger cinema with a huge screen and plenty of theater-like seats. You are instructed by your host to put your "safety goggles" (3d glasses) on and the lights dim. After this, things get much more interesting.
The theater lit up revealing an awards show-esque stage which looked VERY lifelike. This is where I first realized how powerful of an illusion is created by the glasses. I actually took my glasses off to see if there were on-stage live actors before me! At any rate, the show goes wrong from the start (which kicks off with some amazing special effects) and the audience ends up being shrunk. And even though the show uses some seemingly generic 3d effects (snakes and other things flying at your face) it did not make the show seem generic or too gimikee (sp?) at all. I found myself jumping every time something flew out of the screen at me.
However, a visual effect this real can have a real impact on small children. My little sister Kelly (six years old) ripped her glasses off of her head in a few scenes out of complete fear, while other children simply cried. Even some faint-hearted adults may find this show a bit too real. In either case, this show gives you the most realistic 3d effects I have ever seen, like it or not.
The entire show lasted about 20 minutes give or take a few, and ended in a grand finale which left out audience laughing uncontrollably. So if you happen to be in Disney's Epcot and are looking for a fun attraction, look no further than Honey, I Shrunk the Audience.
