| Almighty's Full Review: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror |
I recently completed a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. I stayed off-site with a friend (at no cost). I visited all the (non-water) parks but took no children with me. All of my Disney World reviews will be written from this perspective. I will include this as the opening paragraph for all my reviews for informational purposes. Please forgive the repetition. The following is all original information:
Tower of Terror is another Fast Pass ride. Be sure to get yours and save the long line that can be involved with these marquis attractions.
As you make your way inside the main building you’ll notice it’s interior is made up to look just like a neglected old time hotel (circa 1939). The level of detail is amazing (unfortunately it probably goes unnoticed by most park goers). You (and about 50 others) will then pass through the hotel’s lobby into a library. Here, the lights are turned off and a television in the corner of the room comes to life.
At this point I think I need to mention, that this ride is not for small children. Even big children (like me) sometimes have trouble with the dark rooms and terrifying free fall.
Television plays a short Twilight Zone reenactment (complete with a convincing Rod Serling impersonation) explaining the "horror" you are about to encounter. As the television goes off, the doors across the room from the entrance open (you should try to get as close to the exit before the TV comes on to save some time in line). You then make your way to a dimly lit divided series of elevators (actually several different lines all queuing simultaneously).
As you approach the boarding area you’ll see a rather convincing ride operator (dressed as an old elevator operator/bellhop). At this point if you want to be on the front row of the ride (I recommend), divide your party into groups of three. The back rows each hold seven or eight while the front rows only hold three each.
After you are secured the ride will take you up (like an elevator) an undetermined height. The doors will open you into a very neat Twilight Zone scene where the car you are in actually moves out (forward) into the dark surroundings as the show continues. Eventually you make your way to a completely dark room, you feel the car lock in, then …
Hold on! You’ll free fall several stories come to a momentary stomp and shoot back up in the air. The sudden rise and free fall continues (3 or 4 times) until you are thoroughly frightened. As you fall, the outside world is barely visible (unlike free fall rides at other amusement parks). Having an aversion to heights, I found this made the ride easier to handle.
If you are a free fall junkie or a big Twilight Zone fan, be sure to check out Tower of Terror!
