Pros: Great rate, efficient phone and desk staff, terrific car, quick check-out and check-in
Cons: Car smelled of cigarette smoke for the first few days we drove it
The Bottom Line: Highly recommend--great service, relatively cheap rate on a great car with terrific fuel economy, unlimited mileage, no showstopper penalty fee for a "one way" trip

Bottom line up front: my family and I rented a 2004 Camry from Avis for 2 1/2 weeks at a terrific rate with unlimited mileage. Great car and smooth rental experience--we'd definitely rent from them again.
We rented from Avis after doing some research on Epinions as well as gleaning info from a "leading consumer research magazine" and chose Avis due to the company's favorable overall rating and the good deal they offered when we called to get more info. We were able to get a full-size car (yes, the Camry is considered "that big") for 285.00 per week for 2 1/2 weeks. The clincher is that we could pick it up in one city and then drop it off in another with no penalty. (While they said they didn't charge a drop off fee, it turned out that they tacked on an extra dollar a day to the quoted rate for essentially the same reason). The phone staff proved very courteous and helpful on the several occasions we called, and the desk staff at Spokane, WA Int'l Airport where we picked the car up proved efficient and friendly as well.
The car was in like-new condition with barely 2000 miles on the odometer, the only detractor being a faint odor of cigarette smoke from some previous renter. (This promptly faded after driving around with the windows open and letting some clean eastern Washington air in). No trouble at all with the car for the 1800+ miles we drove it (hey, it's a Toyota!). Surprisingly large trunk--able to hold three large suitcases with ease, and still some extra room for daypacks and hiking boots around the edges. No problem with seating two adults and two large (as in 6') teenagers (again, thanks to Toyota for the design, and to Avis for not mindlessly buying some mediocre GM or Ford product).
When it was time to turn the car in, the Avis operation at Seattle-Tacoma Int'l airport was very efficient. We drove up to the check-out area in the bowels of the Sea-Tac parking garage, and by the time we'd finished unloading all our luggage, the Avis rep had done all the paperwork and we were on our way in a total of about 7 minutes (max). (It helped that the travel gods had smiled on us and there were no dings, etc. in the car).
All-in-all, a great car rental experience--I highly recommend Avis.
