| mskvarenina's Full Review: Tony N' Tina's Wedding |
It's a bit hard to describe what Tony and Tina's Wedding is. Their website calls it "a unique theaterical experience" and I guess that best describes what it is.
My wife and I were looking for something different to do in New York and stumbled upon T&TW while browsing a website devoted to Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. It sounded interesting: "Wedding Theatre with an Italian flare. With audience members as guests, actors exchange vows, feast at the reception, and dance to pop-sensation Donnie Dolce and Fusion." so we decided to give it a try.
Well let me tell you T&TW was a trip! We arrived at St. Luke's Church at about 6:30pm but weren't sure where to go. There were 4 men, one in a white tux, one with a camera, and 2 others standing by the church entrance. We weren't sure if these were people part of a real wedding or if they were with the show so I asked "excuse me, we're looking for T&TW, are you with the show?" The groom immediately began checking his pants and said "Show? What show, I checked...my zipper isn't down" At that point we realized these were the actors and I said "OK, OK, your with the show, can you tell us where to go?" They continued to "act" but finally said they though the invitations were "downstairs".
We didn't realize it but the show had started. We went downstairs and joined a line of people waiting for their "invitations" and the actors began walking through the line lightly conversing with the crowd. The bride's brother for example held a large basket of silk flowers and kept telling the crowd his sister was suppose to be married upstairs but they ended up in the basement.
After a few minutes we received our invitations and were shuffled into a small basement room . It has a very cheesy alter with a small podium, a few metal folding chairs, and a few candle holders. Almost immediately we became part of the show. The photographer began talking to us, then the groom's dad came in with his girlfriend and he shook our hand and asked us how we've been as he hadn't seen us in a while. The girlfriend was dressed in a skin-tight metallic dress and the moment she sat down pulled out a ziplock bag full of makeup and began curling her eyelashes. Meanwhile the father of the bride cracked jokes and interacted with the crowd.
I don't want to give the entire show away (you need to see this show yourself!) so for the remainder of my review I'll concentrate more on the experience and less on the details.
Well the wedding took place in the basement. It was a typical wedding but contained elements that left the audience howling. After the wedding we followed the bride and groom on a 2-block trek through Manhattan to arrive at the reception hall "Vinnie Black's Coliseum". Along the way streetgoers would stare and/or congratulate the newlyweds.
The reception hall was also in a basement, below an Italian restaurant. It too was a somewhat small and cozy room. At one end of the room there was a stage with a band, then there was the dance floor, followed by cafeteria style tables in the middle (the seating against the wall appeared to be nicer), then finally a cash bar at the back.
The T&TW website describes the reception as "Where a rousing reception takes place with the Nunzio and Vitale "families", which includes a pasta dinner, champagne toasts, wedding cake and dancing to a five piece band."
Their description really was a perfect way to describe the evening. Our invitations included a table assignment and we were once again ushered to a table where we joined a few other couples. Well this experience too was non-stop comedy. There was a champagne toast, mild family arguments (like when the groom's father flirted with another woman), and alot of dancing. You don't have to do a thing to have fun here but if you want to get up and dance, you can, and you even have the chance to dance with the bride or groom.
Food wise, it began by the passing of horderves (olive oil flavored bread chunks). Later a tray was rolled out with lettuce and meatless baked ziti and we formed a buffet line to get it. For dessert, a small slice of wedding cake was served to each person. Actually the food wasn't bad considering we were there to be entertained and now fed.
The experience really was non-stop fun. At one point I visited the restroom and found the groom arguing with one of his ushers. I said "Hey, great show!" and he replied, "show, what show? I'm not showing nothin" as he checked his zipper. They just wouldn't break character!
The show ends by Tony and Tina leaving for the honeymoon while the rest of the cast poses for a "family" picture.
