Living in Albany New York is difficult, there are so many options when deciding where to go for a ski vacation. We don’t really have the time or money to go on a weeklong excursion to the west. Stowe is only about 3 hours away, so we take about 4 or 5 weekend trips a year there.
Stowe is a great place for everyone. The main mountain is mostly double black diamonds and glades for the experts. Right next to that, the Mt. Mansfield face, is the gondola. Even though from the gondola summit, you can only access about 4 trails, these trails are the best on the mountain. They are intermediate blue’s, which seem to go on forever.
The summit restaurant is such a neat place to grab a bite to eat during the day, or come back at night at ride the gondola up in your casual clothes. I don’t think I know of any other place in the Northeast that does that.
Spruce peak, on the other side of the road, is a fun little place. An old double chairlift takes you up a hill and plops you down in about 2 feet of powder on a good day. This mountain is almost always empty, since no one wants to take the time on a slow old chairlift. These trails are blue, but there are tons of fun glades to explore with your friends.
From Spruce peak also, you can take a trail, which brings you to the other side of the mountain to Smuggler’s Notch Ski Resort. From there you can ski Smugg’s with a full day pass, or buy a one way ticket, and take the same route back to Stowe. It doesn’t matter if you’re going from Smugg’s to Stowe, or Stowe to Smugg’s, each trail is downhill so you won’t have to hike. Even though this little excursion requires a few Noreasters to cover the ground with enough snow, it sure it worth doing in late February.
