Last January I spent 4 days in the wonderful Whistler/Blackcomb resort in British Columbia, Canada. It was my first time skiing in Canada, and I had the privilege of experiencing the best powder skiing that I have ever experienced in my entire life!
Whistler and Blackcomb used to be 2 separate competing ski resorts who have recently joined forces to become one of the largest ski resorts in North America. The base of Whistler/Blackcomb is actually quite low in altitude compared to the very top which is at close to (or more than) 10,000 feet high. The only bad thing about the elevation difference between the base and the top of the mountain is that is is not unusual for it to rain at the base while it is actually snowing wonderful dry delicious powder at the top of the mountain. My husband and I did not realize this when we first got to the resort, and had an afternoon of panic as it rained and rained at the base. We thought "great now we spent all this time and money coming to ski in Canada, and its raining. We should have stayed home to ski in Tahoe, California".
We stayed at the Crystal Lodge, which is right at the base of both resorts. The old part of the lodge (where we unfortunately were) is quite dreary with fairly ugly rooms, but the new part of the lodge is actually quite nice and cheery. Despite what room you get, if you want to ski, the Crystal Lodge is right at the base of the mountain, a short five-minute walk from the gondola.
The day after we arrived we headed up the high camp on the gondola (an amazing 20 minute ride in the gondola) and had the most incredible day skiing in knee deep fresh light airy powder.
The mountain has some great very advanced and thrilling runs, all much harder then any black diamonds in the California ski resorts. It is challenging offering experienced skiers a real "run" for their money. The only problem is that it is a very popular WORLD class resort, which means you often have to put up with very very long lines.
The actual resort can be quite pricey, with restaurants that seem to be full of snotty over styled food which is not that tasty and a little over priced. This resort is tolerable for people who are REAL skiers because of the fact that it often has incredible powder. But you will find many people at the resort who are actually not interested in skiing at all, but instead in shopping, drinking and spending money.
