Searching for an Irish Pub in New York is like trying to locate a pine tree in the forest. They are virtually everywhere. However, what makes a person who is looking for a Christmas tree by-pass many excellent specimens in search of that "perfect" tree? I think the answer to that question may be the thing that attracts me to Doherty's Pub. It just seems right.
A couple of weeks ago, one of my co-workers was heading out of town. We were looking for a good spot to meet, just to talk shop and see him off. Doherty's Pub was offering fifteen cent chicken wings during the Monday Night Football game, which is what originally caught our attention. We agreed to meet after work at Doherty's.
When we arrived at Doherty's Pub, which is located between 2nd and 3rd Avenues on 52nd street (in Manhattan), there were only a few other patrons. The bartender identified himself as "Paul" and advised us to help ourselves to complimentary nachos, which were in a warming pan against the wall. We obliged, and made short work of our appetizer.
While drinking a pint of Budweiser, and enjoying fifteen cent wings, we learned that Paul was from Ireland, and had only been in the United States for a few weeks. When asked about other menu items, he willingly admitted the entrees that he was unsure about, but was quick to get answers. His honesty and service-oriented attitude is a fresh of breath air in New York!
Doherty's is a dimly lit bar and restaurant, with plenty of attractive dark wood. The bar is well stocked, and offers about a dozen varieties of draft beer. The beer runs between three and five dollars per pint. The wings were delicious, and were served with blue cheese dressing, garnished with carrot and celery sticks. The sauce was hot and tangy, and went well with the beer. Beer and wings...does life get any better?
A patron nearby ordered the Chicken Parmesan, which runs $12.95. The portion that he recieved was outrageous. The plate looked more like a platter and was heaped with linguini, sauce and chicken. I think he got his money's worth! Most of the entrees run about the same price, although they have a 16 oz. Prime NY Sirloin which runs $21.95.
The following Monday, I returned with more co-workers. We again enjoyed the inexpensive wings and beer. Doherty's was offering complimentary meatballs as an appetizer, and I made short work of a plate, while I was waiting for my wings. The meatballs were good.
During this visit, I spoke with the manager, Olive, who advised me that Doherty's has only been open since July (which explains why I don't remember seeing it during my last trip in March and April). Olive advised me that the menu is not completely finished, because they are still attempting to determine which dishes are most popular with their regular clientele. The bar was busier on this visit, and it appeared that several people were enjoying meals, as well as the beverage refreshments available.
My co-workers seemed to enjoy the atmosphere at Doherty's Pub, and it seems like Monday nights may see more of my co-workers in the future. I will be leaving New York on Monday, so I will have to wait until early next year for my next taste of Doherty's tangy chicken wings. But I anticipate the opportunity to again meet with my peers in a cozy environment that "feels right."
I would recommend Doherty's Pub if you happen to be in Manhattan on business. It is a quiet bar that treats the customer well. They seem to understand the fundamentals about customer service. For this reason, I believe they will continue to be successful, in spite of their short history. This is a good spot to meet with friends.
