Las Vegas, Atlantic City, etc. are well-known as American Meccas for those seeking a game of chance. Tunica Mississippi (technically Robinsonville, MS) is fast becoming part of that list of gambling destinations. Tunica is about 30 minutes away from Elvis' Graceland and Beale Street in Memphis Tennessee and more and more tourists are either rounding out their trips to Memphis with a visit to Tunica or setting out for the Tunica casinos as their main destinations.
Gambling is the main industry in this area, formerly one of the poorest counties in Mississippi. Since casino gambling arrived, Tunica and surrounding areas have bloomed--mostly due to the hefty influx of casino taxes. Tunica has also grown a great deal with people, many of which are casino employees, who have decided to relocate. Shops, restaurants and other businesses have sprung up at a rapid pace, giving even more life to Tunica's economy. However, the main force is still the casino gambling industry. There is not a great deal to occupy the non-gambler. But, for the person that enjoys gambling, there is something to fit all tastes.
Nestled in an area that was once little more than a series of cotton fields, Tunica is now home to a great variety of casinos. The elegant Gold Strike Casino and Resort and the spacious Grand Casino will appeal to those who want luxurious surroundings, sumptuous meals and a high-quality of service. Both establishments have multiple theme restaurants. In addition, the Grand Casino has several separate hotels, tennis courts, kid's amusement areas, golf courses and water sports areas.
For those who like to focus on top-quality entertainment, Sam's Town and the Sheraton Casino regularly have stars such as Jay Leno, Bill Cosby and Patti Labelle. Sam's Town is a huge multi-level casino with a western theme, complete with Old West building fronts.
Harrah's Mardi Gras has a New Orleans atmosphere. You can try your hand at catching beads thrown from the balcony or listen to the great Dixieland band as you enter the casino lobby. Fitzgerald's Casino is Irish through and through, down to the shamrock green hotel limousines. Their St. Patrick's Day celebrations are not to be missed. Hollywood Casino is huge and has all kinds of memorabilia and exhibits, many relating to the film industry. It's hard to concentrate on gambling with so much to look at!
Smaller places appeal to some. For those people, Bally's and the new Isle of Capri fit the bill. Bally's is a somewhat smaller version of Sam's Town, with its western theme and the Isle of Capri is a small tropical paradise.
Horseshoe Casino is always crowded, no matter what time of day or night. It also has a western theme. This huge casino has a reputation for high payouts and loose slots.
So far, Tunica is not threatening to take over Las Vegas' position as the #1 haven for gamblers but it is becoming a "must see" with those gambling enthusiasts who visit the South.
I have visited Tunica many, many times and never had a bad experience--other than losing my shirt on the slots!! Even then, the great meals and hotel rooms, friendly service and overall enjoyment made the trip worth it.
