My son wanted to visit the Baltimore Aquarium this summer. We planned a day trip that revolved around the aquarium. We really enjoyed our day and would like to share some information, in case you also would like to plan a trip.
The Aquarium is located at Pier 3 at 501 E. Pratt Street, Baltimore, Maryland, 21202. The cost of a ticket for an adult is 15.00, children 3-11 8.50 and children under 3 are free. They also offer group rates for groups over 15 people. You can also order tickets in advance. For more ticket information call 410-576-3800.
The Aquarium offers numerous exhibits. Some which include Wings in the Water. This is an exhibit that features stingrays and small sharks. We got lucky (well atleast according to my son) and got to this exhibit right at feeding time. Another exhibit Mountains to the Sea traces the water cycle from a freshwater pond in the mountains, into the Atlantic. Puffins is a recreation of a sea cliffs habitat. Another of my son’s favorites, the Tropical Rain Forest is an exhibit where you walk on a pathway through the dense tropical foliage. The Atlantic Coral Reef is an exhibit where you can see hundreds of colored tropical fish swimming on a coral reef in a 335,000 gallon tank. Divers hand feed the fish several times a day, which my son enjoyed. Another favorite, The Open Ocean is where you come face to face with sharks in a darkened 225,000 gallon tank.
Some other attractions are the Outside Main Aquarium which is where you can see the seals and trainers that feed and train them. They also have an Amphitheater where dolphin shows are scheduled daily. A Life-size Model of a humpback whale, the Exploration Station which is a hands-on exhibit that features marine mammals and the Children's Discovery Cove, which again was one of my sons favorites, is where you can handle animals that inhabit the Atlantic such as sea stars, whelks, and horseshoe crabs.
The Aquarium also offers a Pavilion Cafe for when the children get hungry and two gift shops, Puffin Place and the Aqua Shop.
My son and I both enjoyed the Aquarium and plan on going back again. And in the words of my nine-year-old, “That was way cool mom. Thanks so much for taking me. Can we go again?”
