| cntaur5's Full Review: Atlanta |
Throughout the 1980's and 1990's things looked mostly bad for American cities. I originally moved to Atlanta, Georgia during the mid 1990's. While in the Air Force I had the opportunity to travel to various cities in the United States including San Francisco, New York, and Seattle and it appeared that everyone was moving to the suburbs. Millions of families voted with their feet leaving the cities, which were considered urban jungles.
However things have changed, people are moving back to the cities. Cities like Atlanta have become increasingly attractive to suburban empty nesters--baby boomers with grown-up kids, who are eager to trade lawn mowing for theatergoing. And most important are the folks of all ages who never gave up on urban life, the ones who rolled up their sleeves to hold the line on urban decay and ultimately bring real improvements to their neighborhoods, even as suburban flight deprived cities of desperately needed tax dollars.
When I moved to Atlanta, GA I moved at a time when America began falling in love with city living again. With traffic becoming congested in the suburbs and the rising suburban crime rate perhaps city living may not be to bad.
Atlanta is the quintessential American City full of robust neighborhoods, rich ethnic diversity, and the best cheap restaurants in the nation. The MARTA trains system, rumbling poetically above and under the streets. MARTA is considered one of the best commuter-rail networks in the United States making downtown travel easy.
This big southern town has a surprisingly big-city feel, reflecting its various origins as one of American's preeminent metropolitan centers.
