San Francisco is not New York, and it is not LA. "Trendy", SF-style, is not the glitz and glamour-filled LA type restaurant, nor is it NY's nose-up-in-the-air, Armani-clad crowd. Sure, there are some restaurants like that in this city as well, but I wouldn't count them in the SF-style trendy list.
Here are three that made my list - and there are quite a few more. I do not claim these are the top three - they are just three of my Top 10 list of trendy places in SF.
So how did I pick these places? Firstly, the list does not reflect my opinion alone: most of my friends and colleagues agree with me here. Secondly, if a place does not serve a proper dinner, I have not included them in this list, since this is supposed to represent restaurants only. Finally, my criteria for what makes a place cool in the SF way? A diverse mix of hip, cool clientele, snazzy yet quirky decor, eclectic menu, great drinks, and good music ... and of course, the subjective evaluation of it all!
Okay so here we go - in no particular order:
LuLu (415)-495-5775
This is one of the city's better-known restaurants, located in the infamous SOMA area, a huge, loud, bustling place, where food is plentiful and everyone's in a boisterous mood. At one end of the huge space, there is a roaring fire where your duck or chicken is getting roasted ... while you indulge in some very fine mixed drinks at the very crowded bar. Food's mainly Californian.
Clientele: SOMA yuppies, as well as some old-money ...; Mainly couples.
Dress Code: Trendy casual, to somewhat dressy
Le Colonial (415)-931-3600
Le Colonial's bar upstairs is fast becoming one of the most popular ones in the city, frequented by lawyers, bankers, and of course the Internet IPO crowd. It's location - close to several other trendy lounges and clubs - makes this ground-zero for several of the city's ultra-hip, looking to party the night away. It is also one of the few places in the city where you can smoke, since they have a small balcony, and also some open space downstairs. Huge couches are scattered through out the lounge, but there are simply not enough of them - so prepare to stand for a while. Cool, new age music in the background; sometimes live. The restaurant downstairs is upscale Vietnamese and it's very popular, so reservations are essential.
Clientele: Yuppies, tech millionaires, dressed-up women, lots of singles that hang around in groups.
Dress Code: Trendy casual, but you can get as dressed up as you want and you will still fit right in.
Mecca 415-621-7000
This super-hip restaurant in the upper Market area has a really cool interior: everything is stainless steel and flickering lights. The huge oval bar dominates the place and serves some of the best drinks in the city. The food is as eclectic as the crowd. You see artists, bankers, lawyers, gays, straights - just about a few of every type - but most dressed up real trendy. This is SF - so it is also a very friendly place, and hip or not, everyone is welcome.
PS: I have a review of Mecca in my Epinions list. <a href= http://www.epinions.com/rest-review-29A8-48F392E-38DAAE6C-prod6 > Click here for the review.</a>
Clientele: Eclectic, trendy, friendly, liberal
Dress Code: Trendy and hip - this is the place you can try out fashions that probably'd look out-of-place elsewhere
