On Sundays in the outlying Porteņo neighborhood of Mataderos there is an excellent Gaucho fair that I highly recommend going to.
Mataderos is the neighborhood where a large number of slaughterhouses are located (hence the name). Surrounding an old colonial style corral, is the fair with arts and craft stands, many Parrillas (BBQs) with delicious chorizos, vacio and many other cuts of beef. In the center of the closed off intersection is a stage where local foklorico bands play. Below the stage people from the crowd join in with traditional dances; zambas, chacareras, etc. Off to the side the "weekend gauchos" in traditional dress are on their horses and participate in several riding competitions down the closed off street.
The crowd is fun and relaxed and almost totally Argentine. I have not seen this fair written up in any of the major guide books. If you only have one Sunday in Buenos Aires, go to the antique fair in San Telmo, but if you have another and it's a nice spring or fall day, go check out Mataderos.
The fair is at Ave. Lisandro De La Torre and Calle Corrales. It's near the city limits quite a ways from downtown. It's accessible via bus lines 92 and 126. A taxi would be about $15 one way.
Check out the website www.cybermapa.com to see a map of the neighborhood.
