The British Virgin Islands are some of the most beautiful Islands in the world. They are a whole bunch of little islands and cays spread over a large area, which provides for some great Scuba diving/snorkeling, and other water activities. The Virgin Islands in general are known for being sailor's heaven. Millions of people flock there every year to sail through the "Sir Francis Drake" Channel. I've been going there for as long as I can remember, each year staying there in a different way, and I can tell you, chartering a boat, Bareboat or with a crew, is the best option. You get the best of all worlds.
There are a few companies that charter large boats... The first thing you need to see is whether you want to sail, or whether you'd prefer a powerboat. For Sailing, I can only recommend checking out SunSail, located in "Soper's hole marina" on tortola's west end. For powerboats, however, I'd recommend that you rent from the USVI, and go through customs with the boat to go to the BVI. VIP charters is a good powerboat (Power-yacht) company. They have good boats, and they provide a good service.
Otherwise, if staying on land is what you'd rather do, I'd recommend Virgin Gorda. The resorts there are better, and more comfortable. Plus, Virgin Gorda is more tourist-friendly, which is nicer if you don't know the islands. If you like the "local" scene better, there are some nice little resorts on Tortola that will do just fine for people who just want a decent room. Or, you could always go for the option of renting a house. There are many good places to go... just ask an agency.
No matter where you go in the BVI, you're guaranteed to see some of the most beautiful sights you'll see. I just recommend getting a boat... you can do a lot more, and the entire "virgins" are at your disposal...
