| realtraveller's Full Review: English Harbour |
Situated in one of the world's most beautiful natural harbors, Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour is the best preserved example of a Georgian shipyard in the world. During the 18th century, when the Caribbean islands were important as sources of sugar and spices, the British navy fought for supremacy over France, Spain the the pirates. This dockyard was Britain's chief naval base in the eastern Caribbean. Here the British were able to repair and reprovision ships. Horatio Nelson served here from 1784-1787.
Many of the restored buildings have been converted into restaurants and shops. Others cater to the many yachts that put into this harbor. We visited shortly before Antigua's renowned "Sailing Week". There were many world-class, multi-million dollar pleasure craft anchored here. Viewing the sleek sailing ships against the stonework background of the old fortress that guarded the entrance to the harbor was unforgettable.
The museum in the Admiral's House is well done. In it the visitor learns the history of Antigua, from the days of the Arawak and Carib Indians, through the days of sugar and slavery to Antigua's independence. Antigua was first known as Wadadli, now used as the name for its good local beer. The decks of British war ships were painted red to disguise any fresh blood. The cisterns needed to collect fresh water became breeding grounds for mosquitos and as a consequence many British sailors died of malaria and yellow fever.
After visiting Nelson's Dockyard, drive to Shirley's Heights for a splendid view of English Harbour from above. On a clear day, you might see Montserrat's smoking volcano 20 miles to the south. This is the best viewpoint in all Antigua.
Nelson's Dockyard is located on the south side of Antigua. Admission is $5.00.
