My husband and I took this ship from San Juan in 1996. We cruised when it was a different name, but the ship and officers, wait service, were the epitome of perfect! No matter what the name of the ship. This was my first cruise. We have since cruised on the Fascination at Carnival [ see my report for that experience! :) ]
Since I wasn't sure what to expect, I obtained the SeaBands, and medicine from my doctor to thwart any sea sickness that might occur. It didn't, and I was hugely thankful. Since we have vacation normally in September, we have found that the Cruise Lines offer substantial discounts because this is Prime Hurricane season. We took an inside berth, and I was very surprised that the rooms were sooooo small. Although it was okay, I would have liked to have a slightly larger room and Bath. Getting ready every morning, and evening did require an intricate dance! We had a wonderful Cabin Steward, who kept us supplied in plenty of towels, and ice. He asked the first night if we wanted the beds put together every night or left separate. And every night they were together along with a chocolate, and the next day's ship board news. Since we found the room temperature slightly warm, my hubby asked for a fan, which at first gave the steward a problem, but he found one somewhere and made him happy.
Prior to our departure, we knew that each evening at the dinner would be a different theme. One evening, Country & Western, 2 formal evenings, Caribbean, 50's, with the first night being casual and no tight dress code. I found that I totally enjoyed these evenings. The service was 1st class, and the food was delicious. My husband is a meat & potato kind of guy, and I am the exotic & try something new kind of person. We were never disappointed. The waiter's and wine steward and Busboy, entertained us with song & dance, jokes, and made us laugh. We were seated at a table with a honeymoon couple from Denver, and two English couples, and we found their company quite entertaining!
The evenings showcase included extravaganza's of dancing & singing, very professional. We enjoyed the comic's and the disco as well as our good fortune at the casino.
We met the honeymoon couple for drinks at the Piano Bar, and found that later in the evening it became Kareoke. Which was a hoot!
We stopped at 5 islands on our trip, they have blended together in my memory. They each had beautiful beaches, gorgeous blue, aqua-marine blue, seagreen oceans. We even saw a few folks riding horses on those beaches. If you get the opportunity to take the Jolly Roger Cruise to nowhere in Barbados and you want a great party, this is the one! They start with a really STRONG rum punch, and it lasts all day long! Between the sun, beach, walking the plank, and dancing on board, and the Rum Punch, we were sloshed, but quite happy!
I found that I really enjoy cruising! Norwegian's Ship board Officer's and Employee's were very friendly, courteous, anticipated your every need. We felt they deserved every penny of the tip's they earned for the week. There was nothing that happened on that cruise except for the first day when the ship was trying to get out of the weather of the approaching hurricane. It hit San Juan several hours after we left port on Sunday night. This one didn't do near the damage that the Hurricane did two years later when we took a cruise on Carnival.
