My husband and I cruised on the Mercury for the Oct . 31 sailing date along with two of our friends. We are frequent cruisers and have taken advantage of several lines including Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Lines. We were not impressed with this cruise overall, though I can't say we hated it. Who can hate a vacation? Our room was very nice, spacious and our cabin stewardess was very attentive. We also enjoyed the entertainment which included a disco and a very good lounge act. We were very disappointed in the food on this cruise. We were told that the food was rated extremely high, but found the menu restrictive. This is the first cruise we've taken that did not offer a nightly buffet, and 3 out of 4 of the buffets they did offer were very disappointing in both selection and quality. The grand buffet was excellent, gorgeous ice sculptures and a variety of items. The staff though very friendly seemed under trained on this ship and the casino dealers all seemed to wish they were anywhere but at work. We were very upset to learn that in several different ports transportation to the island was not arranged, but had to be privately contracted for a fee. Usually they at least drop you off on the mainland and side trips are the traveler's responsibility. The fare to travel from the sand mine where we docked into the island that we were lead to believe that we'd be visiting was $50 a couple. That is awfully high, considering that we paid for the cruise with the assumption that we'd be taken to all ports listed in the itinerary. This alone is one reason that I'll not cruise with Celebrity again, and would not recommend the line to others.
