Pros: "Sales" and promos help you fly quicker.
Cons: Reservations agents have the fine print and AAdvantage members don't

1. Read all the materials the airline sends you and save them for reference. I just redeemed 50,000 miles and $324($250 American voucher for flying first class on a later flight)and $45 check plus $23.75 taxes on one ticket. This would have been 80,000 miles normally plan ahead off season.
a. I am flying to Europe on a special promotion which allows me to redeem only 30,000 miles to Europe rather than the traditional 40,000 miles off season. EUR3099
b. Originally I was told that I could redeem US Airways and AA miles and the copayment I tried to get the other ticket from my spouse's account for 25,000 miles plus $150 co payment but could not do it because AA would not allow us to mix US Airways and AA mileage, but they did extend the hold on the reservation for another month so we could work on our options. Award Code RME25E4.
c. A helpful agent helped us find the alternative promotion which is 20,000 miles and $295 copayment. Award Code RME20E3.
2. If you are mixing different methods of payment, ie. voucher and check the can not process it over the phone, you have to mail it in.
3. AA will allow you to redeem mileage awards if your level is within 500 miles of the needed miles. ie. 19,504 can be credited for 20,000.
