British Airways - SFO to Rome

I recently traveled round trip from SFO to Rome through Heathrow (May, 2000) with British Airways and can report that I would not hesitate flying with them again. In total, there were four flights since we had a stopover in Heathrow and all the flights were extremely smooth. The planes were clean and the legroom was surprisingly adequate. We flew on a 747-400 from SFO to Heathrow and a 767 from Heathrow to Rome. Same for the return flights. The planes, however, did not have the individual TV monitors embedded in the back of each headrest. An inconvenience if you want to watch a movie and are far away from the centrally mounted screens. As far as I know, Virgin Atlantic 747-400’s all have individually mounted monitors. The flight crew was extremely polite and the captain kept us informed of our flight details on a regular basis. There were no problems with our luggage.
There were, however, two problems that I wish to point out.
One was the enormous line that we had to wait in to check in at SFO. We waited approximately 45 minutes to check in. We arrived 2 hours before check in and were surprised at the long line of travelers that already beat us to it. My suggestion would be to arrive 3 hours ahead of time if you don’t like waiting in long lines.
The second problem occurred twice. It involved the meals that were served on the flight to and from SFO to Heathrow. Both times, they ran out of the low-cal/ healthy meals (fish or chicken) and vegetarian meals. Some people on board ended up not eating because of this. My suggestion is to try and get seating assignments near the front of the plane so they don't run out by the time they get to you.
Overall, I would fly British Airways again. I would have to say that Virgin Atlantic is a little bit better but in my book, any flight that takes off and lands, is a great flight.
