I have been a Travel Channel subscriber for about six months now and I feel like I personally know the hosts of Lonely Planet. Ian, the funny British character, is the adventure seeker. He takes me to faraway places where the accommodations are let's say unconventional and I wouldn't dare venture on my own. Yet, I wouldn't want to miss out on anything and I follow him. I also enjoy following Justine. Her excellent presentation of Israel's history and culture made me anxious to plan my own trip to this ancient land of rich heritage and unfortunately nowadays of controversy and violence. Justine was also my guide to Turkey. I followed her journey from the comfort of my living room sipping on a cup of Turkish coffee (didn't I mention that I have a Turkish coffee set!!??) and reminisced on my own trip to Troy, Ephesus and Istanbul a couple of years ago.
Alby Mangles is at times too adventurous for me but his show still attracts me. It is the perfect mix of adventure full of heart-warming human stories and romance. Alby has an endearing appreciation of the simplicity of life of the tribal cultures and also a very interesting array of female companions.
Hunter Reno's niche is exotic islands. She is a woman who is not afraid to explore the islands by herself. What makes her a successful host, though, is her consideration and appreciation of the local culture and customs.
Samantha Brown rekindles my dream to build a home. Even though her show focuses on vacation homes, I always find details in the architecture and the interior design that I would like to see in my own house. But don't get me wrong. I am still planning that visit to the Colebrook, the Victorian house in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Its elegance and style hold my imagination hostage.
I little bit of constructive criticism won't hurt. I distanced myself from The World's Greatest Spas fro a while. The host's giggling and hissing at the camera annoyed me immensely. Now I see that the Travel Channel has replaced it with a new show Spectacular Spas and a new host who avoids tasteless jokes and expressions.
Mysterious World gets a little too creepy for me at times but I did enjoy The Ten Plagues of Egypt. And Secrets always builds up the suspense and delivers a great show.
We are currently away from home for a month and I see that the Travel Channel has introduced a new show The Best Places to Kiss. Being the hopeless romantic that I am I cannot wait to watch it and plan a romantic getaway.
Amazing Destinations is my getaway to the world. Rila Monastery in Bulgaria (check out my opinion on it) was one of the destinations that received recognition. I was amazed by the show's skillful description of its history and architectural beauty.
I am not always able to drop everything on the spur of the moment and schedule a trip. Like everybody my trips are limited by time and money. St. Augustine once said:
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.
With the Travel Channel I can read as many pages as I want whenever I feel like it.
