| jesusfreak5311's Full Review: Tim Hortons |
Tim Horton's was named after a Canadian hockey player (Tim Horton) who mostly played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In the final year of his career, he played for the Buffalo Sabres. He was killed in an automobile accident in 1974 on the way home from a game in Toronto. I think I may still have a few of his hockey cards.
I really enjoy going to Tim Hortons. I absolutely detest coffee, but I enjoy their hot chocolate. Although I don't drink their coffee, I know that it is the best since others rave about it, and I know people who have to have their Tim Hortons coffee fix about three times a day. I don't like any drink with coffee in it, although Tim Hortons does offer a variety of coffee type drinks, such as regular coffee, decaf, iced cappachino (which can be made with cream, milk, or chocolate milk), tea, and specialty coffees (French Vanilla and English Toffee). For non coffee drinkers, such as myself, Tim Hortons also offers 2% milk, chocolate milk, coca-cola products, hot chocolate, apple juice, orange juice, fruit punch, peach juice, iced tea, and bottled water. I hope I am not forgetting anything. If I am, please let me know. The hot drinks come in the size of small, medium, large, and extra large, and can be served in a take out cup, or a sit in mug.
Another favourite Tim Hortons item is the "chili in a bread-bowl." This product seems to be offered for a limited time only. It is their delicious chili in a rounded bread that becomes the bowl. Tim Hortons also offers many other soups and sandwiches, such as tuna or chicken. These items come by themselves or in a combo with a coffee (which can be substituted for people like myself) and a donut.
Tim Hortons offers many different types of donuts, such as chocolate, vanilla or maple dip, boston creme, sugar or cinnamon coated, apple or blueberry fritters, honey cruellers, chocolate glazed, or donuts filled with creme or fruit filling, topped with either icing sugar, or icing. I am told by the friend who works at Tim Hortons that the donuts with filling are made by inserting an "edible balloon of filling" inside the donut. Donuts can be bought for $0.75 each, or about $4.50 for a dozen. Another donut product that I like are Timbits. Many people believe that they are the "donut holes" but they are actually made separately. They also come in flavours such as chocolate or sour cream glazed, sugar or cinnamon coated, fruit filled, fritters, etc. The can be bought in packs of 20, 45, or 65.
Tim Hortons makes excellent muffins. Many flavours also come in a low fat version. Some flavours are raspberry, carrott, blueberry, cranberry, chocolate chip. orange, and fruit explosion. These sell for about $1.00. Another product that I like are the cookies. The sell for $0.35 each, and can also be bought in a half-dozen or dozen. Some flavours are chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, peanut butter chocolate chunk, and gingerbread. The gingerbread cookies are more expensive and come with icing, and are usually made to represent a cartoon character. Once a year, Tim Hortons sells "smile cookies" for $0.75. These are made for a fundraiser for a local childrens Christmas telethon.
Bagels are also a popular item. The come in many flavours such as plain, sesame seed, poppy seed, multigrain, etc. They can also be purchased with plain, low fat, strawberry, or garlic and herb cream cheese. I really like Tim Hortons pies which are made in banana cream, chocolate cream, and various fruit flavours. I don't care for their cake too much. Cake can be bought by the slice for a whole cake can be purchased. They make chocolate, vanilla, black forest, and more. Around Easter time, they make a special cake that is in the shape of a bunny. The last items that I can think of that is sold are specialty donuts and tarts. Some items are bowties or wedges, which is like a white donut covered in chocolate dip, with sprinkles(on the bowties only) and whip cream. They also make butter tarts, and strawberry tarts.
Every year, around March to May, Tim Hortons has a "roll up the rim to win" contest, where with the purchase of a hot drink in sizes medium to extra large, you can roll up the rim of the cup to see if you have won a prize. There are over a million food prizes such as coffee, donuts, cookies, and bagels to be won. Also, secondary prizes are usually bicycles, barbeques, or $500 cash. The grand prize is 1 of 20 vehicles (usually Pontiacs). I hardly ever win food prizes, but my friends or my parents often win. I guess I am just not lucky. I have heard a rumour, but I am not sure if it is true, so don't quote me on this. The big prizes are usually found on the back of the rims, otherwise, the opposite side of there the arrow is to show you where to roll up the rim. So, the winner would first win a food prize under the arrow, and then should roll up the whole rim to check for a bigger prize. Although my friend who works at Tim Hortons has denied this, another Tim Hortons employee confirmed it, and I have heard from another friend that her aunt's friend won a prize that way.
As for the decor of the coffee shop, it is usually white, light brown and maroon. It may sound ugly, but actually, it is not. Each shop is remodelled every ten years, so things are fairly updated. Usually there is adequate seating, with two and four person tables. However, on busy days, it may be difficult to find a seat.
Almost all Tim Hortons have a drive thru. Many Esso stations also have a mini Tim Hortons inside, which comes in handy for road trips, or people on the way to work who have to fill up their vehicles. Also, most are smoke free, except for the few that have a closed off area for smokers.
I would recommend Tim Hortons to people of all ages. It is a good hang out spot, but it can get loud at times, depending on the number of people present. Even if you are not a coffee drinker, Tim Hortons has many items to suit your needs.
