In honor of it being ice cream month I'm reviewing Baskin-Robbins
Here are a few ice cream facts to start with:
Italians created ice cream in the 17th Century, the cone debuted in 1904 at the St.Louis Fair.
Geo Washington spent $200 in 1790 ($4100 in todays money) on ice cream
Popsicles were originally called Epscicles after Frank Epperson who commercialized them in 1923.
Baskin Robbins is selling apple pie ice cream this summer.Yummo!
Bobby Flay, Julia Roberts, Rosie O Donnell and Barak Obama (Ill. senator) all worked at Baskin-Robbins.
Mint chocolate chip rules at Baskin-Robbins even though Vanilla is the national favorite.
This months flavor of the month at Baskin-Robbins is Triple Play, a peanut popcorn Cracker Jack concoction. B-R created there own popcorn so it would stay crisp even when frozen. See how they think things out?
An average Baskin-Robbins scoop in 1946 was 2.5 oz. Today a typical scoop is 4 oz.
Baskin-Robbins is always a fun place to visit. How could ice cream not be fun? The fact that Baskin-Robbins has a taste me policy is terrific since there are SO many flavors its always really hard to chose the right one. An endless amount of time can be spent doing this. Sort of a WIllie Wonka experience only ice cream.
Our Baskin-Robbins store is small and in a shopping center upstairs. I usually go there with my grand kids and we do our little tasting. At a whopping $1.25 a scoop we want to be sure we're sure of our selection.
Having just watched two hours of new flavor selection process on television's Food Channel we're more impressed than ever The 3 top flavors in this taste off were Burnt Sugar Sticky Pudding, Canoli and a Tropical Coconut flavor. The winner was the Burnt Sugar Sticky Pudding. Flavors, consistency, mouth feel are all taken very seriously. The tasting, selection of a flavor, the ingredients and the advertising is all a very serious, complicated procedure. It's also very scientific and a lot of attention is paid to many points you take for granted when you lick that scoop. There are many, many meetings with chefs and scientists as well as ad campaign people to decide what a new flavor will be.Almost as intense as sending a man to the moon.
Our local Baskin-Robbins is clean, brightly lit and usually staffed by friendly teens. We sit outside the store in the mall upper deck seating area and people watch.
Baskin-Robbins offers a Birthday Club which we have been members of for years. They sell cakes in every imaginable design for every occasion. The grandkids usually choose a picture cake . You must be 12 or under to belong to the Birthday club. In the cake area, you can get race car cakes, graduation, celebrations, sports and more with a flavor and size of your choice. But, back to ice cream.
There are 1000 flavors that rotate over 31 days -the basic flavors of the Baskin-Robbins 31 flavors idea remain the same. New odd flavors are featured each month.
There are permanent flavors, lowfat flavors, no sugar added, regional flavors, seasonal flavors, sherberts, ices, sorbets, low fat yogurts and sundaes. There are 6 different sundaes, Brownie, Oreo Cookie, Nutty S'Mores, Banana, Strawberry, Kiwi, and Jamoca Mint Chocolate.I'm a basic hot fudge/Brownie sundae.
There are 17 toppings from Hot Fudge to Heath Bar, Peanut Butter Sauce to Crushed Pineapple.
My experience with Baskin Robbins has been terrific. If you get Pistachio there are nice big Pistachio nuts in the ice cream, Cookie Dough has large chunks of dough. The ice cream is creamy.
Generally speaking, a 1/2-cup serving of regular ice cream has about 270 calories and 18 grams of fat, whereas a lighter version may only have about 100 calories and anywhere from 0 to 3.5 grams of fat, to quote my source but even though thats a huge difference when youre counting calories. I think if you're going to have ice cream have whatever tastes best to you, indulge just don't over do.I'm I don't really pay attention calories. I don't eat ice cream often enough for it to matter and I think if you're going to have a treat, enjoy your treat.
