| gohokis's Full Review: Sony VAIO GRX500 PC Notebook |
After much contemplation on which computer I should purchase for college, I decided to purchase a high-end Sony laptop. Ideally I should have purchased a light mobile computer that could accomplish my school related activities, mainly the use of Excel and Word, with relative ease. Instead of purchasing a light, effective computer, however, I chose to purchase a heavy, powerful Sony Vaio Pcg-grx500c. Having invested a large sum of money in such a computer, I hoped that it would perform at the levels I desired and run my beloved video games extraordinarily well. What I came to find out, however, was that the computer failed to perform well on many levels. The computer has a number of problems. The first problem I encountered was the slow movement through windows. I tried to alleviate the problem by disabling Windows' visual effects. Disabling the visual effects initially improved performance, but in the end the computer continues to perform at horrendously slow levels, even though it has 512 mb of RAM. The second problem that I encountered was that of the computer having trouble reading compact discs. The cdrw drive takes forever to read a CD sometimes up to nearly a minute to read a simple audio CD. Sony tried to address this problem by developing new drivers, but even with the new drivers the computer continues to read cds very slowly. Writing to a CD, however, is relatively fast. Another problem with the computer is the inability to remain powered for a long time. The battery only lasts around 1.5 hours when running energy demanding applications such as DVDs. Purchasing another battery is of course an option, but considering the hefty price of $200 for a second battery: I have avoided doing as such. The final complaint I have about the computer is probably more my fault than Sony's fault. The computer weighs too much to be mobile. Carrying a computer that weighs around nine pounds all over campus is not a pleasant experience. I suppose the discomfort would be tolerable, however, if the computer actually performed well once it had been lugged to its final destination.
