gkirk2000's Full Review: Sony Grand WEGA KF-42WE610 42 in. HDTV-Ready LCD T...
I have had this TV since May, 2004. It is currently January 2005, so I have had plenty of time to evaluate it's strengths and weaknesses.
I purchased this TV when I moved into a new condominium - I wanted an HDTV that would look good with the contemporary styling of my unit, and not be overwhelmingly large, so I settled on a 42" screen.
When I purchased this set, I was struck by the visible picture superiority it possessed compared to all of the other TVs in its price range - DLP, LCD and plasma.
For standard TV signals, this TV does an admirable job of reproducing them with a minimum of artifacts or blurring. With an HDTV signal (or a DVD signal - my DVD player outputs both 720p and 1080i) the picture is simply astounding! Detail and clarity are remarkable.
I do notice the slightest amount of "ghosting" with ultra-fast action scenes that shift between light and dark backgrounds. It's barely noticeable, but it's there - one of the only drawbacks of LCD technology.
Also, the black level is excellent, but not "pure" black like one would experience with a traditional CRT TV. That being said, it doesn't take away from the visual experience.
The number of inputs this TV possesses makes it quite versatile. Built in upsampling from my VCR feed is remarkable - picture quality is much better than expected.
The built in speakers sound quite good. I have mine disabled though, as my sound comes through a rather high-end audio system I assembled over the past year.
There are numerous adjustments one can make with this TV in terms of white levels and color balance.
The TV is quite light (about 68 pounds) and has a pleasing profile. Although the TV itself isn't very deep, when one puts it on a stand it will occupy more space.
Overall, I am quite pleased with this TV. The only thing I am disappointed about is that the value has fallen so sharply over the past 8 months - as one would expect with any consumer electronics item.
