| jo.com's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-FJ210 Personal CD Player |
My daughter told me she bought a new CD player but when I saw it over Thanksgiving and used it, I knew I had to have it. I bought it through Price Grabber This is the Sony Walkman FM/AM/TV Weather Band Digital Tuner Model number D-FJ210 Personal CD Player.
About my new CD Player:
My previous CD player by Curtis was in need of being replaced and skipped so much so that I couldnt even use it on a treadmill or in a car. My daughter told me that she runs with her Sony and it doesnt skip. When I saw it had a TV option I knew I had to have it.
~The unit is small and light. It weighs 7 ounces and is 5 3/8" x 6" x 1". It is also attractive if you care about that. It is silver metallic in color with a blue accent around the front.
~It takes one CD at a time
~It uses 2 double A batteries. The average playback time for the CD player is 40 hours; for the tuner it is 70 hours in continuous playback. Mine did not come with an external power source so unless I buy one I will be using batteries. My daughter's came with a source that plugs into a cigarette lighter and since she doesnt have a car, she gave me hers so I can use it in my car without using up batteries.
~Inside the disc player is what is called G-Protection. This gives it the ultimate skip free protection.
~It comes with a 3-inch remote control that you can clip to an article of clothing.
~The player has the hole for the headphone, a switch that says sounds/avls, which is used to boost the bass; and p mode/repeat function. This can be used also if you are not getting good reception. You hold this down until the word local appears on the display and let go when it disappears. I have found this function helpful if I am having problems getting good reception because of weather conditions or the building I am in. It has an open button, which opens the cassette player. You will find the battery compartment inside the player.
~It has a battery life indicator, Digital AM/FM Tuner, and has a heat resistant lid.
~It has a 51 Station Preset Memory (30 for FM; 10 for AM; 4 for WB-weather; and 7 for TV)
~You will get Sony headphones that go on top of your head. I dont mind them. I find them comfortable, adjustable with large soft ear covers. My daughter spent an additional $20 to get headphones that go around the back of her head.
~Playback features include Repeat Mode, Resume Play, Shuffle Play Mode, and Track Search. There is a bookmark playback function so you can bookmark tracks you might want to hear often.
~Continuing around the player youll find 2 volume switches to make the sound louder or softer.
~The AM/FM Digital Tuner goes on with a black button on the display. By pressing this button you will get the band you want, you will get a weather function and a television function.
~In the areas in which I have used the television I have gotten 4 stations in very well. I can listen to Oprah now wherever I am! I havent had as much clarity with the weather band.
~D/A Conversion: 1 Bit Quartz Time-Axis Control
~Frequency Response: 20-20000Hz, /-3dB
~The warranty is 90 day for parts and a general one-year warranty.
What I think:
When my daughter and I were listening to her player in my car I was a bit nervous. She was using the CD player, looking for various tracks and a couple of times seemed to have trouble. I figured I would never figure out this machine. I did and it isnt as intimidating as it first looks. It takes patience and practice (Unless you are an electronics person) to get all the settings saved, figure out the playback functions and how to get from TV to weather to radio. If I put in a CD, I just have to hit one of the functions on the other side of the player to move it forward or backward. It can be that simple or you can use all 51 settings, which I havent begun to do.
The sound is excellent. Granted I am used to a Curtis CD player. The Sony is in a different league and you will know as soon as you put on your earphones that you are in a different league. The sound is clear and crisp whether I have the player on soft or loud.
The Sony Walkman D-FJ210 doesnt skip for me. I dont run but I do use various cardiovascular equipment and can sit it of stand it on the magazine rack with no problem. I couldnt even bring the Curtis to the gym and I certainly couldnt use it in my car!
There is a place for a strap but that has to be bought separately which I havent done and I havent bought a case. I am careful with it and keep it in a very small backpack to protect it while traveling around although normal wear and tear wont leave any scratches or marks on the silver player.
Final Thoughts:
If this Sony Walkman didnt have the TV feature I probably would not have bought it at that precise moment. When I saw that, I was sold and got a great deal online. My daughter is 25 and this meets her needs and she loves it. Im 51 and I can say ditto. You can make is a simple CD/Radio/ TV/Weather player and just use a few settings and not bother too much with all the feedback options or you can spend an hour as I did reading the instructions a couple of dozen times to get it all figured out. If I could, though, anyone can.
It is really a simple player to use; the sound is great, the features fantastic and I think the Sony brand is dependable in my experience with other Sony products.
