What do I need? Why an all-in-one?
I wanted an color inkjet printer for printing daily stuff. I also needed a scanner, mostly for scanning stuff to send as e-mail attachment. A copier would be nice too since that will save me trips to the library. So I narrowed my choices down to HP PSC-2110 and 2210 (which has photo memory card reader and fax and is $100USD more than 2110). I rarely ever use fax. Also since there are online faxing services, I don't think I'll need more than a scanner. So I settled on the cheaper 2110. I got it from our school's computer store for 250 USD.
Thank goodness I have an all-in-one!
So three days after I got my new printer, I was buying my winter vacation plane ticket from a travel agency. Since it was the first time I purchase from them, they asked me to fax them my driver's license and passport. I asked if I could e-mail it to them instead and they said yes. At that moment, I was so glad I bought an all-in-one instead of just an inkjet! Otherwise, I would've had to run to the computer lab to finish my transaction (moderate 10 minute walk, but definitely not pleasant at night). Also many times when I just have to save a copy of something, the copier function came in really handy. I'm very glad that I bought an all-in-one!
PSC: Printer
The printer is HP quality. It makes clear, sharp prints offered in four modes: Fast Draft, Everyday, Normal, Best. I usually print draft documents with fast draft, but even that, the prints (12pt fonts) are clearly legible and easy to read. Each page is spitted out in 3 seconds. Printing with best is much slower, but the quality is amazing. It's hard to tell my document prints from that of a laser printer! I usually hand in my papers using the normal printing mode. I've tried printing some photos and they look wonderful too (remember to set the paper type and print quality right).
Some quibbles about the Printer
Gosh when the machine takes paper, it makes a loud "click-crank-swish" noise that totally scared me the first time I used it. It's VERY loud. Well, it gets the job done though so I'm cool with it's noise. Another thing is that when you print more than one page, and if you don't pull out the paper tray out (the one for catching the paper as they are printed out), the papers will be "spitted out" as each page is printed. You can easily correct that problem by just pulling out the paper catcher tray extension. With the tray out, it's also much easier to shuffle the papers afterward.
PSC: Scanner
It's a flatbed scanner with a scanning area long enough for an A4 document (which is slightly longer than a letter size) and wide enough for a letter size paper (my point is, it's for scanning documents). A software called the "HP Photo and Imaging Director" will guide you through the scanning process. The software is easy to use, and if you know how to use a scanner, you can use this one with no problem. The scanning quality is good, though not exceptional. I especially appreciate the fact that it's a flat-bed scanner, since it made it so simple to scan.
PSC: Copier
You will place the document you want to copy from on the scanner. There are several options on the printer panel indicating quality (best/normal/fast), color or black, and other setup options (such as number of copies, etc.). The copying quality is good also, adequate for daily use. I appreciate that the copier can be used without turning on the computer. However, I wouldn't use this PSC for printing large quantity since it would eat up a lot of ink.
Size and look
PSCs with flatbed scanners are BULKY. They take up as much space as a normal flatbed scanner would, and you need extra space for the paper tray. However, you must remember that a PSC has already saved you much more space than having both a printer and a scanner (not to mention a copier).
This PSC 2110 has the HP look -- it looks professional. It has a usual dark gray body and a lighter gray top (scanner cover and control panel).
Problems so far?
I had a problem with the printing preview once, but I believe it was a software problem and the problem went away after I got a new laptop (I had a Acer Travelmate 610TXV and now I have a Toshiba M30). It wasn't that big of problem even before it was resolved, since I only ran into it once out of the many times I printed.
If you're considering it...
The most important questions to ask yourself is:
Do I need an all-in-one or separate printer and scanner? When do I see myself using a scanner? Do I also want a fax machine?
The scanner can come in handy at times unexpected. However, if you want high quality scans, go for a separate scanner model. If you need a fax machine, opt for the higher end PSC 2210.
