| tparker's Full Review: Compaq Presario 715 PC Notebook |
I purchased my Compaq Presario 715US about three months ago. What drew me to this model were its features and the quality of its construction. I new this unit weighed more than some of the other brands, but that was not a major concern of mine. As a full time college student with a full time job I needed a laptop that would handle most of my computing needs while on the move. I also wanted a computer that would handle heavy use without babying it. The 715US was the ideal choice.
To give you a little idea as to how the system can be upgraded I will tell you what I did. I purchased Microsoft Office XP Professional Edition and installed it. After I installed the program I discovered that the 256 Meg of RAM was not cutting it. The system would bog down and I knew I would need to install more RAM. I purchased another 128 Meg of RAM and installed it in the expansion bay on the back of the computer. It was as easy as removing a screw and snapping the new memory. I also went into my system configuration utility and modified some of the programs that run in the background at start-up. This put my system at peek operating mode and I was well pleased.
Standard features include a 14” Screen, a 20 Gig hard drive, 256 Meg of RAM, a super sweet DVD/CD-RW Rom, and a 1.2 GHz AMD Athlon processor. The software included with the computer left a little to be desired. So if this is your first computer you may want to budget a little extra for upgrades to the software. I will say that the Windows XP Home Edition operating system that comes standard with the 715US is a very stable operating system.
As a middle of the road computer nerd I would say that the Compaq Presario 715US is a good value. A good friend told me once, “When you go to buy a computer you should get the beast computer you can afford with the features that you need.” I have used this philosophy every time I look at buying a computer and the formula works well. I hope you can use this wisdom as well.
