| cdbongo's Full Review: RCA Lyra RD1080 (128 MB) MP3 Player |
I saw this item on ebay for $10 ($15 shipped) so i decided to buy it. When i got it i saw that it was much smaller than what i expected it to be and surprizingly light. Until you put the batterys in, which brings me to the other issue: Battery Life
This lyra gets about 3 hours on two aaa batterys, yes you heard me right, two aaa batterys and 3 hours of battery life. THis is totaly unacceptable, because if the thing needs TWO batterys(which takes up about as much as room as the player itself.) , then you would think that it would get some good battery life but guess again.
Getting the files on there is fairly easy, but because of the e x t r e m l y S L O W usb (1) connection, you might need to let the thing run overnight.
128 is not a lot of memory but you can upgrade it and since the unit supports mp3PRO which i highly recommend using, you can put about 8 cds on this with the bitrate at 96kbps which some will diss but i honestly cant tell the difference between that and my cd player.
So playing the music is the part where this mp3 player really sucks, first off, when you turn the thing on, expect to wait about 5 secs before you see anything on the screen, then you have to select radio or music every time you turn it on which gets very annoying after a while, and then when you finally get into your music, dont expect to be able to find any of it, the music appears just as you encode it, in other words if you want to get to the song that you encoded 56th, then you have to push the next button 56 times, this thing has absolutly NO browsing capabilities at all, no artist browsing, no genre browsing, no album browsing, you cant even expect the song browsing to speed up as you hold down the next button,
and when i say button, i really mean joystick, a super small joystick that is fairly reminecent of a loose tooth, after much use, pushing the next button so much, the joystick sort of floated to the right side of the screen, so it looks like you are pushing the next button always, just because i have pushed it that way and worn it out. the other buttons seem to work just fine, but the volume switch is the same way and i have to push very hard to turn the volume up but i am afraid that i will break it.
And did i mention the lag, expect to wait at least a second before your command goes through, and because of that, dont expect to be able to fast forward or rewind mp3 tracks.
Well, i got this for $10 which is a very cheap price to pay so i felt a little guilt about hating the sucker so much, but when i looked at it at a more logical financial situation, i saw that i probably wasted more that $10 on batterys after the first week, and way more than $10 of my time waiting for file transfer, and for the stinking thing to respond to my commands.
