It looked good from the interstate. Looked new, looked easy off, easy on. Tired of driving, I stopped. I should have kept on going. My first clue should have been the 'manager's special rate' of $124, from which he wouldn't budge. I was right, it was overpriced.
Location
The Holiday Inn Express in Woodland California is one of the poorer examples of this usually good chain motel. This Holiday Inn Express is in an industrial-type area, completely enclosed with busy streets. Yet there are no restaurants close by so after a day of driving, I had to drive some more to find a place to eat dinner. Downtown Woodland California doesn't have much selection. There's a Denny's, an Applebee's and a few local cafes. Slim pickings.
Amenities
The indoor pool was closed (out of order) the night we were there. The breakfast buffet was below average even for roadside motels. The 'omelettes', a term I use loosely, were more rubber than eggs. The baked goods were stale. And there was no fruit. In California, NO FRUIT! The breakfast room was large but plain. They did have the USA Today.
There was a small room with a free-use computer that worked well.
Room and Bath
The hotel, like most new hotels, had interior hallways and the room itself was very large. There was plenty of moving around space and plenty of space for luggage. But there were large flood lights just outside the room. Fortunately, the blackout drapes worked. The walls must be thin because during the night I could hear the phones ringing in other rooms. Having a microwave and a mini-frig was nice (maybe needed due to the lack of other food options nearby).
The bath was very nice. Granite counters, rainshower showerhead and a nice array of shampoo and lotion.
I usually stay in a Residence Inn in Sacramento when I make this trip. It's much roomier and about the same price, has an evening cocktail mini-buffet and a much better breakfast, fireplace, kitchen, two baths.
Well, next time.
