| wolfpackvoltar's Full Review: e.Digital Odyssey 1000 (20 GB) MP3 Player |
Well, it took me 27 days to receive my player from e.Digital, Ill go into that problem later. Players packaging came in a nice box and inside was a unit incased in a plastic molding that a retailer could merchandise for their shelves. The Odyssey 1000 40GB was a bit larger, thicker, and heaver than I thought. I was very impressed with the look and feel of the player, nice chrome finish, large LCD backlight screen, nice hologram of the Odyssey name, well placed wheel controls, very expensive looking.
The first thing I did was to charge the battery and to read all the instructions included with the player. I have an extensive music collection already using MusicMatch as my library and burner; (Over 5,500 songs) so, it was not necessary for me to download the MusicMatch software. I strongly suggest using USB 2.0 for downloading music files, otherwise you will be downloading all day. My cost to upgrade to USB 2.0 was $29.00. Using e.Digitals Music Explorer software was a complete disaster, too slow for large files, insists on reorganizing files by alphabet, no drag and drop to move files up or down, not being able to play music files to help organize your playlist. I went around Music Explorer by downloading my MusicMatch playlist to (My Music) on my PC and named the folders the same as my playlist on MusicMatch, then transferred them to Music Explorer. I downloaded all 5,500 songs to my player taking approximately 1hr 20min (Cool), I downloaded my playlist later. All the options on the player were set to zero or off; so, I adjusted the sound, Eq, turned on SRS WOW effect, SRS levels, Trubass, SRS mode, and adjusted power off to 5-min. I did not use the ear buds that came with the player because I already have a very nice titanium headphone set. I tried using the FM tuner but was not satisfied with the sound because it had an on/off scratching sound in the background that was very irritating. I called e.Digital, and they said they would have a software upgrade to take care of the problem in 30 days? The sound quality on the MP3 side is superb, nice bass, clarity, and very good sound separation coming through my headphones. All controls seem to work nicely and are conveniently easy to get to. The scroll wheel can be adjusted to, slow, med, or fast. The VoiceNav feature still has some bugs to work out; however, it can recognize folders, but has trouble with song titles it worked maybe 40% of the time. VoiceNav is a good selling point, but I doubt very few will use it. I plugged the player into my amplifier to see how it sounded on my surround sound. This is when I got very excited. The sound quality was as good as my 100 CD changer, plus I have my playlist and all songs available when I want to hear them. (Goodbye CDs) When you turn the player on your start up time is a respectable13-sec to song playing, then after that its instantaneous. You can fast forward or go backwards through a song, and the player also has ID3 tracking. The player comes with a nice leather case for protection, with belt clip, which doesnt interfere with the buttons. Battery life is what I expected. I left my player running for over 11hrs and it was still going strong. Recorder works great, time stamp through PC was a nice feature.
