| oliveiros_jr's Full Review: Apple iPod 3rd Generation White (15 GB) MP3 Player |
Before I begin, let me just say that I've had 2 ARCHOS mass storage MP3 Players: the "Jukebox Recorder 20", and the "Jukebox AV120". 2 years altogether.
You don't have to look too much into the iPod to realize it's the best looking ever mass storage MP3 player. It's sleek, it's thin, it's light, it's seducing. You can't beat the looks.
Owning an ARCHOS in the past has made me a little spoilled about features. ARCHOS gives you everything: you can browse through folder, FM radio, you can RECORD from any audio source via wire, you have a buit-in microphone, you can have the player charging while in USB interface, you can record videos from your VCR thourh the S-video/RCA input to get great AVI DivX files.
iPod gives you games instead. A fancy clock, calendar, touchpad controls, a round thing in the middle for you to taggle.
Price is definetly an issue. This thing costs far more than other player. With the same U$330.00 I could have gone for an ARCHOS AV140 with 40GB.
One thing I really hate about iPod, perhaps the greatest of them, is that it uses the information contained on the ID3 Tag of the MP3 to sort the songs. You can't sort the songs like you want to. It's all preset. You know how when you download songs they never come with the ID TAGs right? Well, iPod uses this very information only, to sort all songs by artists, music, style, artist, composer. Say for example you have downloaded the album BEAUTIFUL WORLD by TAKE 6 from internet. You get each song from a different source. One of the sources has created the file wirting "TAKE 6" for artist. The other has used "TAKE SIX" (with the SIX spelled out). A third source has got the album name spelled wrong and wrote "BEAUTIFULL WORLD" (with 2 LL's). And an other has even mistaken TAKE 6 by "TAKE THAT". iPod will make the lists, and although in your computer you might have these songs sorted out in the same folder nicely, you'll get each song in a different folder in you iPod. You'd never imagine that the moronic person who ripped the song into MP3 got the artist name wrong, and you song has gone to the TAKE THAT folder. You just can't find the song you want. Not to mention that you end up having 10 diferent folders for the same album, and each song is in a different one. It gets messy and confusing. That has P*SSED me OFF a lot. They should allow you to browse by folder, the same way you have on your computer. That way you'd know exactly where everything is. You have to be able to browse customly, and not do what APPLE has preset you to.
After owning the iPod for 3 months I have to say I was very disapointed with APPLE. I was expecting a lot more. I have now decided to go back to ARCHOS and get an ARCHOS AV140. Some may disagree with me, but that's my opinion. I've had both players, and didn't like APPLE.
