My family was on the way home from our vacation when we rounded a curve on an Arizona Highway (don't remember which one since I was a kid then), and all of us gasped at the beautiful sight of Sunset Crater looming in front of us. We soon found a picnic spot and ate lunch it its shadow, making for one of the more memorable moments of the trip.
I do not know of the availability of roads or trails on the mountain. But if you are looking for beauty for beauty's sake, Sunset Crater is worth seeing. You can see a volcano without getting burned!
